Questions about Quickshade.

Sorry if any of these have been posted before im kind of a noob around these parts.

1. I use quickshade religiously, love the stuff but recently I have found that on some of my models (Ogre kingdoms) there sometimes is some very small black eh hairs is the best way I can describe it on them after I apply the quickshade and let it dry for a few minutes.

2. I also use a brush to apply it and was wondering how much should you put on? I tend to give them a decent coat but nothing too much

3. How do you clean your brushes after using it? Getting abit tired of having to buy some cheap brushes and just throwing them away after im done with them.

thanks in advance, Gore

Questions about Quickshade.

Welcome to Dakka!

The hairs are most likely falling off your brushes when applying the quickshade.

As to how much to put on.... I'd imagine enough to cover the model and have a second dry brush handy to soak up whatever overage you have that needs to go away.

If its an acrylic ink than masters soap and luke warm water should clean them pretty well. If its alcohol based use rubbing alcohol for cleanup.

Questions about Quickshade.

Goregut wrote:
2. I also use a brush to apply it and was wondering how much should you put on? I tend to give them a decent coat but nothing too much

That's the million-dollar question with Quickshade/dip. I've seen pics of dipped models with such immaculate application that you'd never know they were dipped at all. I've seen others that are nasty, blotchy messes. How much you need depends on the look you're going for, the amount of texture on the model, the colors you're using, and what (if anything) you're doing to remove excess. If you Google around a bit, you'll find a ton of different procedures people have developed for the results they want. The official suggestion from AP is to dip and then shake off the excess (into a spare box or something you don't mind messing up), or else to apply carefully with a brush. But I've read of several people attaching their mini to the head of a large nail and then spinning that nail in a power drill. And one guy I found didn't like that method, so he attached his minis to a string (attached to a foot? I dunno...) and spun them around like a lasso outside.

Personally, I've just applied a generous coat with a brush and then tried to soak up the excess as well as possible. But I find that only works acceptably on models with a lot of texture to grab dip. I've not been satisfied with my results on smoother figs. Maybe if I tried that lasso thing...

3. How do you clean your brushes after using it? Getting abit tired of having to buy some cheap brushes and just throwing them away after im done with them.

You want mineral spirits for that. Water or alcohol won't do it.

This has happened to me before. I bought some cheap brushes and the hairs were falling out. I switched to some cheap acrylic brushes by a different manufacturer and problem went away.
Questions about Quickshade.

I use quickshade on all of my figures but brush it on rather than dipping.

I use the same brushes everytime. Clean-up is done with odoroless mineral spirits and the brushes come out good as new.

I apply the quickshade and then dip a Q-tip/cotton swab in the mineral spirit. You can then roll it over areas where you don't want the shade. It works extremely well.
