The whole battle is a set of mental simulations established by Malcador to test marine's mental stability for when Horus finally comes to Terra. There's a big worry between Malcador and Dorn that if 9 legions could fall, any marine could turn at the worst possible moment. The Ultramarine being tested is the ultramarine that had been in a coma for the later part of the Great Crusade. The one from Forgotten Sons
