clear resin models?

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone has thought of making models out of clear resin? I always wanted to make some tau stealth suits out of it and paint it like they were decloaking. anyone else have thoughts?

clear resin models?

Pretty cool concept. I've got some 1:1 clear resin kicking around here somewhere, I'm not sure what the polymer is in the finished resin, so I'm not sure how it takes and holds paint.

Obviously, you're casting you own suit that you built from scratch... Right?... Now that that is out of the way, I would imagine you would have some issues with the paint being just on the surface of the clear resin, so if you didn't paint it right, you'd see the back of the paint through some parts. I could see some possibilities with tinting the resin. You'd want to do 3-4+ mixes at least. One with no pigment, then step them up to fairly dark pigment (the part that goes under the painted area). You would want to set your mix cups up with the right amount of pigment already in them as you will want to do the multiple pours at timed intervals. Basically, for a shorter pot life I would mix, pour, then immediately start mixing the next pigmented resin, then get that poured before the first pour has become too viscous to mix anymore, and so on down the line. Getting these to slightly fade into each other and form a fairly good gradient will be tough as you'll be filling a closed mold. But if you get it right, I could see a transparent-to-dark translucent model.

Haha sounds like a pain in the ass, but a very cool challenge. But you could always just cast one totally clear and see how it goes rather than try out my complications.

good points, maybe it would be better to just cast half the model and try to line it up with the GW plastic

That might work. I'd say give it a go with the whole model in clear and if you don't get a good result (maybe some washes would tie the painted parts into the clear), then try half and half. I still think it's a really cool concept. I've got this image in my head of clear blending to smokey translucent resin blending to black suit with a lined out digital camo look starting in the clear to smoke blend and getting more defined as it moves into the painted area.

well if I were to try this I'd have to pay someone to cast them, I have neither the materials, time or experience lol
