Painting with orange... Is it just me?

Hey all,

I recently came up with the idea of an orange and black themed craftworld for my growing Elder army.

However, I am having a lot of trouble with the paints.

I am using Citadel 'Fire Dragon Bright' and 'Troll Slayer Orange' over a base coat of white.

Both colours seem very thin (almost like a slightly thicker wash) and this is causing any slight signs of brush strokes to stand out like a sore thumb. Further, if I overload the brush in an attempt to stop this, the paint goes on like cheap acrylic, thick in some places and thin in others, leaving the model looking like it has been painted by a 5 year old.

Suffice to say this is driving me up the wall.

I always make sure that the paints are stirred fully and I am not having this issue with any other colors.

Any help on what I might be doing wrong would be really helpful.

Thanks

Painting with orange... Is it just me?

I haven't used GW's current paints, but the older oranges did sometimes need a really good stir to get the pigment mixed through properly.

I've also found that oranges and yellows go much better over a bone or flesh-colour base than over white.

These:

... were done with a black undercoat, followed by a coat of bestial brown, then bronzed flesh, and finally the orange. Then a wash of red and a drybrush of orange back over the top, highlighted with a little white mixed into the orange. (Sorry, no idea what those are in the new, silly names.)

Painting with orange... Is it just me?

Generally, when you paint with reds, oranges, and yellows, you want a nice foundation coat underneath.

Red - a brown primer coat followed by Mechrite Red (old foundation color) provides a nice base.

Yellow - Dheneb Stone (old foundation color)

Orange - Tau Sept Ochre or even something like Vermin Brown will give you a good basecoat to work with.

There are all the old paint colors ... not sure what their equivalents are now.

Painting with orange... Is it just me?

Fire dragon and troll slayer from the gw line are labeled as layers and I find it hard to use as a base.

I found it really easy to use Vallejo deep orange as a base. Then use troll slayer from gw as a shadow. Then fire dragon bright as a highlight. Washed with brown it gives your models a sort of "I've been in the trenches look. And for even more depth in highlights the next layer would be Vallejo light orange. They all seen to scale well together and blend easily with the brown.

The Vallejo colors are from the model color line.

Edit one. I use white as a primer. And the deep orange as a base ( I airbrush both of these) then its on to my other table for highlights lowlights and washes. (still going back in forth between tables using gloss and matte varnish between some steps working on new techniques)

Re:Painting with orange... Is it just me?

An agitator ball in the colour pot is your best friend, especially with apparently too liquid colours or metallics, but it helps quite often
Also, as others pointed, using a proper base colour (i.e. Jokaero Orange) improves the result. If it's still too runny/liquid, remember not to overload the brush and/or try not diluting it too much, or it will lose consistency (you have to eyeball it, I fear, but around 1:1 ratio for basecoat could more or less do, as 3:1 or more thinning may be needed for layers...)
The tip of an "underbase" coat of bronzed flesh (or whatever it's called now) is golden if you primed black.

(If any of the above was too obvious, sorry... but tips always help someone, I hope ^^)

I would use several much thinner washes, rather than one thick wash as I would do on the infantry.

I have one picture of this technique on vehicles, but they are all still wet so look much worse than they do when dry (and they have not had the black wash applied):
