Basing Suggestions for SW

Hey guys, new member here.

I got into 40k this past summer and have seen an improvement in my painting that I am pretty happy with. After browsing the forums and some other sites though, I have found my basing a little lacking. Originally I just paint the base with the Lustrian Undergrowth textured paint, then drybrushed it wih Rharkarth Flesh, and then added a few dots of grass. In my more recent models I have added a few skulls or small stones made from sprue clippings. I still feel like the bases are missing something, maybe some different color or textures that would just make them a bit more varied and noticeable. I am not really set on the type of environment I want it to be so all suggestions (snow, fields, mud) are welcome.

The tough part is thinking of something that would either match well with the bases I have already made, or wouldn't require too much reworking of my current bases.

Here are some pics of current guys, the first one shows two of my more recent bases.

http://imgur.com/a/2Q7Up

Wow, nice work man!

The models themselves look great, and I love the bases. If you wanted to add more too them, try adding different textures with different sizes of sand. I've got some fine sand, and sand from a sandbag like one puts in the back of a truck for traction. The sandbag sand is about all I use because it has such great variance in texture and grain size. 60lbs go a loooong way too.

You could also try stippling, or a light dry brush of other tones. Other greys, some greens, browns, etc. Just lightly to give it some depth in tone. I also use bits of orchid bark for larger stones, mostly on my larger bases. I do the same thing with the different tones by taking every wash I have and putting it on in patches over the base and mid coat on the stone. I then do a light dry brush of the base color and light highlight to tie in all the different tones.

Thanks man, those are all great ideas and wouldn't require too much reworking of the old bases, perfect!

For some reason I had stuck in my head that it needed a whole other color or snow or something, but using more drybrushing or washing to give more depth to the current color is a good way to flesh it out.

I make a point to look around at things whenever I'm out, for inspiration on basing, or terrain building, weathering, whatever. Looking at the ground and earth, nothing is ever just one texture, one color, one shade, ever. It helps quite a bit, but I just wish I could turn it off sometime!

Glad to be of help!
