step 1: Build the base layer
the base of this costume is going to be a black morphsuit which I will then cover part of with upholstery foam to create the basic shapes of a necron body. this will not have much detail and is primarily to add some bulk where I need it to make the rest of me look slimmer.

step 2: build the detail layer
this is where you will be able to start to recognize the costume as a Necron. I'll be adding the details like the ribs and the other details with this layer of foam.

step 3: cover in latex
to create a kind of "skin" for the costume I will then cover the costume in a few layers of latex from a special effects supply store. it should create an even shiny coat over the entire costume (excluding the eye holes of course) this will also give me a surface to paint on.

step 4: paint it
this is the final step, I'm going to paint the body a solid silver color, then use other colors (primarily green and gold) to add some detail.

if all goes well this project should be ready in time for Origins next month.

now here's how far I've gotten so far on step 1:

I've got most of the arms done, still need to work on the head, hands and legs. also if you're wondering how I'm going to cover my midsection there's a very simple way of doing it: lots of wires and cables in the front, and a cape in the back.


also because I'm a rather short fellow I've made a pair of stilts to make me seem taller. this combined with the added bulk of the foam will have a slimming effect on my midsection and limbs, making me look more skeletal. I still have some work to do on the stilts, but they're coming along nicely so far.

this was the beginnings of the rib structure, which I've since completed.

and here's some detail on the hands. it was a lucky break that necron fingers only have two segments, because I would have absolutely no dexterity if I had to make the fingers in three segments.

and here's where the suit stands now. I've added the beginnings of the mask and I've started applying the details to it. I've also decided that the main thematic element of this costume will be gems. I'll be putting gems on the head, shoulders, arm, and palms.

this is how the front looks so far. I've added a crest and a skirt.


and this is the back of the costume. the spine will hide the zipper. I'll be using Velcro to merge the two halves of the spine.

pretty soon I'll start covering the body in the latex, then finish the right hand before I cover the arms in latex. then I'll get back to working on the stilts.
