I wanted to paint a tank model in a desert camo scheme. Is there a way to combine the two techniques? Or will the multiple layers after the pre-shading (basecoat and camo in two layers) be too thick to achieve decent results when using a chipping medium or the hairspray technique? And will it spoil the effect, when the base for the chipping isn't uniformly dark, but pre-shaded - I was thinking about using a light grey primer with white highlights and dark grey shadows for this step.

So lay down your weather colour you want to come through, then hairspray and stick your salt or whatever you are using down. Then apply your basecoat.

After that do your pre-shading as normal and then remove the salt. That should combine both of them with the best of results.
