New to Necrons - 500 pt Escalation League (building to 2500)

Hey guys,

My FLGS is starting a brand new escalation league in a few weeks, and I have decided to go with Necrons. The league has some rules, in that you can only start with an HQ and 2 troop choices (no named characters)
and have to purchase additional slots/troop types with points earned from playing/winning. Seems like a fun idea, but means I want to be somewhat structured in my list building.

Escalation is 500/1000/1500/2000/2500, with "phases" every 2 weeks, and 2 games played per phase.

I have never played Crons before, but here were 2 different 500 point lists I was considering to start:

Build 1:

Necron Overlord with WarScythe and MSS
Catacomb Command Barge

Ghost Ark
8 Warriors

5 Immortals
Gauss

499 Pts

Build 2:

Necron Overlord with WarScythe, MSS, and Weave
Catacomb Command Barge

Royal Court
2 Harbinger of Despair w/ Abyssal Staff and Veil of Darkness

5 Immortals - Gauss

5 Immortals - Gauss

500 pts

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Immortal models I have are the older ones, but I can proxy Tesla if needed. Other armies being played are Chaos, Tyranid, Space Wolves, Necrons, Tau, Dark Angels.

I need to win at least one game to earn enough points to unlock a Heavy slot for Annihilation Barges at the 1000pt range.

Suggestions as to which you think would be more effective?

Thanks!

I like the first one but go with tesla for the immortals seems like a nice start. You could probably drop command barge and get an annhilation barge for less and maybe use the extra points to get in more immortals

Can't take the AB as it doesn't fit the league org chart rules.

Tesla in the back to hold objectives, CCB to carve up
Rhino's...

Just afraid that if the 8 warriors go down I won't have
Any units left to grab objectives.

I thought that the DS option with the Cryptek's in the
Second list could be powerful at 500 pts. though.

I would go with something like

OL - WS, MSS
CCB - Gauss
Tesla Immortals (smaller)
Gauss Immortals (larger)
RC with 2 Crypteks one for each Immortal squad
probably a Lance-tek (no SP) for Teslas
either a Veil-tek (for mobility) or Storm-tek (for lightning and Haywire)

If you are allowed transports for your troops, consider droping the CCB for a NightScythe. At 500 points, it should do well, and it scales nicely - useful right up through 2500

New to Necrons - 500 pt Escalation League (building to 2500)

I second foolishmortal's advice for swapping CCB for Nightscythe, if your going to come up against Rhino's and any other race transports then you should take a Nightscythe. I think you can't go wrong with a Stormtek and if you end up with some points left over give him the lightening field so your opponent will be hesitant to charge you.

I would go for;

OL - WS, MSS, Semp

5 Immortals with Tesla + Desptek (Veil and Shroud)
6 Warriors + Stormtek (Lightening Field) in Nightscythe

You got some anti-tank in there, you can force leadership tests on units with low leadership. You have a flamer template weapon in there, you have a TL tesla destructor on your nightscythe.

For me that seems like a well rounded 500 point list.

New to Necrons - 500 pt Escalation League (building to 2500)

I like anubi_gate's list. I would happily play it and enjoy myself, but I have a few concerns

One relates to the escalation aspect of the event.
Can you take the SW off the OL later? You may not want it with a CCB, or you might want the PS instead, but not both.
Will you want Warriors later? Will they want an Ark?

The second is the aggressive nature of the list. This will table a decent number of opponents, but you run some risks. DS mishap with 1/2 your points (including Warlord) is bad.

Finally, the unit roles/strengths seem mixed. This is great at the 500 points level, but will be less satisfying later.

Consider the limitations of the format and make your choices accordingly

New to Necrons - 500 pt Escalation League (building to 2500)

As far as the league rules go, I have to keep the troop choices, but I can swap loadouts.

I.E. I could take the SW off of the OL, but if I wanted a DLord I would have to purchase him.

Dedicated transports can change, as there is no "slot" requirement for them.

My only fear with the NS was, starting with so many units in reserve, getting tabled before it could come in and losing.

The only reason I had the SW on him in the CCB was because I had 15 extra points. Should have realized I couldn't take 2 VoD......that's why I posted these lists! Thanks!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
anubi_gate, I like the list, and I think I will go with it! Strategically, would I want to just camp objectives and make the enemy come to me, or should I play agressively with the VoD?

The next decision I would have to make is at 1k points. Probably have to buy a few models. I could either choose the DLord/Wraith, or add the AB, but won't have enough points to do both. Some sample lists:

WraithStar
Dlord - Weave, MSS
6 Wraiths - 2 WhipCoils

5 Warriors
NightScythe

6 Immortals - Tesla
NightScythe

9 Warriors
Ghost Ark

996 Points

--------------------------
Barge List

Overlord with WS, MSS
Catacomb Command Barge

5 Warriors
NightScythe

5 Immortals
NightScythe

Annihilation Barge
Annihilation Barge

Harbinger of Destruction
9 Warriors
Ghost Ark

992 Points

Your wraithwing is going to take a lot of fire. You will need to make sure that you wait till you have more targets before you do anything aggressive with the wraiths themselves. You need to get them onto your prime target with as few losses as possible.

The AB is a little more versatile over all, not to mention you get two for 180 points.. compared to 230for the wraiths. It is good vs pretty much everything but av 13/14.

Speaking of av 13/14 are you using the CCB to handle things like landraiders? Just remember you have to at least clip the unit but not land on it, in your 12 movement, it is far harder than it sounds and leaves the back of the CCB open for shooting or being assaulted. They pop that thing and your poor warlord is going to get shot to death.

Finding a way to stuff a stormtek in with the warriors on the scythe wouldn't be a bad idea.

_foolishmortal - I thought the whole point of the NS was the mobility? So, keep the Tesla Immortals near the back objective, VoD the other group of warriors around the board, and just use the NS to shoot stuff? Terrified of when those SW drop pod in.

_Roci - Yes, the CCB was for vehicle destruction.
