Quality of Forge World Pre Heresy casts?

I was kind of inspired to start painting up a representative Diorama of every Preheresy space marine legion.

But then I started looking at the models UP CLOSE. They seem to not look as clean as normal 40K space marines, I.E. I see a lot what appear to be "flaws" in the casting, such as tiny raised spots, on what should be a smooth surface(center of should pad for example).

I'm not sure if this was unintentional, or was designed to look less "perfect", since they are 30K..not 40K

Anywhoo, I don't think the problem is insurmountable, as the flaws can be converted into battle damage.

Can anyone comment on this?

Thanks!!

GG

I find the quality to be great, but it depends what you would compare them to. Resin casts will usually have some imperfections.

I took a few shots of some FW 30k resin marines prior to cleaning if it is helpful. This is from the Loken vs Abbadon set;

Here is a few finished FW pieces;

Hope this helps, I would definitely recommend buying some to check it out first hand. There's a lot you can do to fix some of the minor imperfections, and the models themselves are usually pretty awesome.

Quality of Forge World Pre Heresy casts?

I think the Loken and the Abbadon kit is an exception; I have a quite a few pre-heresy pieces and they generally have less detail and are of lower quality to other GW products. I would expect more imperfections in resin, as well as some more modelling and prep required, but some things are ridiculous. The MK III Iron Armour, for example, has a stiff/thick resin tab protruding from the recess where the legs should fit. Getting rid of it is a horrible pain, made more difficult by the thinly sculptured and frequently miscast codpiece directly adjacent. That said, they are AWESOME. You should get some ;-)

Re:Quality of Forge World Pre Heresy casts?

Thanks for the pictures and comments. Yeah...that kind of confirms what I thought I saw.

1) Uneveness in some of the edges. It seems random?
2) Non flat surfaces, where they are supposed to be flat
3) I could see some intentional armor chipping in the Loken model, but I could also see some lumps and other imperfections that seemed out of place.

I have seen some really nicely done forgeworld preheresy marines out there. Look like if I take on this project, it may be a lot of work to get them to showcase standard.

GG
