Having alot of trouble with the white robed area...

I want to add a bit of depth but i tried some black/brown wash and it just ended up looking terrible, didnt mix too well with the ivory. I've been told to build up the color by starting with a earthy color and then layering on top...

What happened with the sepia wash?
