Hi guys,

Having alot of trouble with the white robed area...

I want to add a bit of depth but i tried some black/brown wash and it just ended up looking terrible, didnt mix too well with the ivory.
Try a sepia wash. It's a much lighter shade of brown suitable for shading white or bone colors. You want it thin and only apply it to the recesses. Keep it from pooling except in the deepest recesses and you may need to apply some glazing of the original color to make the transition look right and cover any wash that stained the raised areas.

Thanks for the response. I should mention though i actually tried thinned down sepia wash, didn't work so well.

I've been told to build up the color by starting with a earthy color and then layering on top...

That works as well.

What happened with the sepia wash? Thin it too much and it dried splotchy or only left outlines of where it was?

Try thinning the wash less. If you go too thin with just water the binder gets too watered down and the pigment gets diluted. The results are splotches. You can try adding a medium of some type to the wash to help keep it from breaking down.
