Transferring images/patterns to models

My Land Raider is coming today, so I've been giving some thought to how to paint it up. I intend to add some Norse gripping beasts, and knotwork to it. I will need to trace the image onto the model prior to painting it on or it will be horrendous. Without purchasing special transfer sheets, are there any other methods? I know about making temporary tattoos with tracing paper and gel pens, I wonder if this will work. Given the complexity of the images, cutting it out to use as a stencil is something I'd rather not do. What have you all tried?

You could try copying the original image using a Grid Drawing technique. Might give you a little more control over what you're doing, since it essentially breaks the process down into smaller chunks.

That might work too, if I can't find an easier way. I've never seen a Land Raider in person, but it appears the surfaces would be plenty large enough to draw a grid on them.

I'm not sure if this will help - it's using tracing paper with pencil applied, as you may already have tried, but the design is drawn on freehand, and painted after the image has been outlined. Anyway, i'll post the link here as it may be of some use in your image conundrum:

http://fromthewarp.blogspot.co.uk/2009/05/land-raider-redeemer-freehand.html

Print something reversed, flip it while it's still wet and rub the back. Some of the printer ink will transfer from one surface to the other. Obviously how successful it is will depend on the type of ink and paper you are using. I believe my inks are made by HP.
