Matte varnish spray question

Never tried it.

My go-to matt varnish is Testors Dullcote - if you can find it, that is. If you're in Sydney, the Tin Soldier in Penrith, or the HobbyCo in the CBD occasionally carry this stuff.

The Army Painter matt varnish is also pretty good stuff.

And in a pinch, you can brush on Vallejo Matt Varnish - it's available at almost every shop in Sydney, from the Hall of Heroes in Cambelltown to the new shop right above the Sydney GW Battle Bunker.

If you're in Melbourne, give Realm of Legends a shout.

Matte varnish spray question

For the "best" protection on metal models you would want to use a gloss varnish, followed by a matt.

The gloss is much stronger, and the matt will bring the gloss look under control.
