Newcomer's very basic questions on painting

Hello everyone,

I am a newcomer to tabletop gaming and I have some very basic questions specifically on WHFB regarding painting and assembly. Please be gentle as I know that these questions are very basic.

1) Do I need to glue the parts on the miniatures together - For example glue it to the base plate and glue the arms to models or glue the weapons to the hands? It seems to fit snugly just fine without glue.

2) Is it a must to get Games Workshop's thin plastic glue or will any regular super glue do the job?

3) Is it a must to prime the models before painting?

4) Should I paint the base plates together with the model, or should I do it individually?

5) Finally, a general question - I bought a Skaven Battalion to start painting, and I wanted to ask how can I identify which models are which. (I already have the Skaven army book). Being an amateur, it is hard to identify which models are which - for example, which are Clanrats, which are Plague Monks etc. In the Skaven army book, there are pictures of the various armies. Should I refer to the army book or should I go to the GamesWorkshop website to find the name of the model?

Thank you very much for your answers!

Newcomer's very basic questions on painting

The internet is very much your friend. Don't hesitate to google anything you can think of that you're not sure about. Not knowing which miniature is which is good google fodder. There are lots of tutorials on this site, so searching here is good too, both in this subforum and the painting and tutorials sub forum.

You generally don't want to buy anything GW other than minis and codexes and maybe paints. The paint is good quality, but higher priced and lower volume than other miniature paint brands which are arguably better, but in general at least equal to GW paints. GW super glue is outright bad - I really like using Zap-A-Gap super glue gel. The thick consistency really helps. There are better and worse super glues so might pay to look into which one to get, there should be good discussions here.

It's a must to prime. If you weren't aware, it's also largely considered a must to clean mould lines (before you prime). The least fun part of the hobby but makes the models look so much better. If you're new to painting, look into Army Painter coloured primers. They can really speed up the painting process, and if nothing else look better than straight black or white primed minis if it takes you a while to get around to painting them.
