Noob question (probably)

How do I attach a finecast model to a custom cork rock base? I figured I'd just glue it but then a buddy was telling me I have to do some fancy drilling of the feet and attaching with pins or toothpicks

Yeah, you would be better off pinning it through the cork, to the base. Otheriwse, a little sideways pressure on the model could result in the cork cracking, and the model will come away with just the little piece glued to his feet...

Okay thanks for the help! Sorry for what was probably to more experienced folk, a silly question. Any advice where I can get the pins or what to use? like do I use metal wire or something? or are there little hobby pins made for exactly this? I know I can get the drill at GW

Using something like paper clips and some pliers to cut them to the right length should be decent enough metal pins for things like this when pinning.

If it's a human-size model then just superglue will do fine.
Finecast is very light so you really only need pinning for larger minis (IMHO)

I use paperclips or short lengths of 16g galvy that I have laying around, instead. A 1mm drill bit should work well enough to accommodate either (assuming standard paperclips - the larger and smaller sizes are made using different diameters of wire, obviously), and both can be trimmed with the diagonal cutters at the back of most pliers, if you don't already have something better. It really doesn't take anything fancy.

Don't waste your money on gw tools. You can get better quality tools much cheaper. I got a 250 PC tool set including the drill(generic dremel) for £35 from maplin. Most budget electronics stores carry the same type of equipment.
