GW game board turf finish, need advice...

Hello all,

Just finished painting and flocking the board. What should I use to finish/protect the turf. Called GW, of course they recommended their spray varnish they sell for $16 a can.

I also see some people using the woodland scenics scenic cement. And some using Crylon Matt varnish.

I want it to look good and be as durable as possible without effecting the look. Cost is not a huge issue.

Thanks in advance....

If you want to maintain the "soft" feel of static grass, then your just going to have to tough it out and deal with eventual flaking off.

If you dont mind a "stiff" feel to the grass, then just water down some elmers school glue at about a 1:1 ratio and use a spray bottle to "mist" the glue mix onto the turf and let it dry.

Good luck!

Did a little test in a small sample. It is ok on grass. Would it look the painted parts look cloudy? Have you done this? If you did, any photos?

Thanks.

PVA (Elmers) glue theoretically dries clear, but it can yellow or go cloudy over time, and can also go cloudy in humid conditions. If you're going that route to hold the grass on, you would be best off still adding a coat of sealer over the top.

I've never seen the need to seal static grass, though. It may come away a little over time, but if things start looking a little threadbare over the years, you can just add a little more on.

What top coat do you recommend. Is the GW one the best or can I go with a lower cost alternative? What do I get? Crylon? Matt varnish?

Thanks for all the advice.

Krylon matte varnish is what I use for my models and terrain. keeps grass on just fine.

my hardboard game table that is flocked was done using watered down PVA and then matte sprayed over as a topcoat, and flakes off. especially when the cat rolls around on it...

so I would say that pva glue isn't the bees knees for keeping this stuff down

I typically super glue my static grass on, and then matte spray over it as a topcoat, and it stays on fine.. super glue for whole table will be hard to do, unless you get a nice big bottle of cheap super glue... but you'll probably end up like charlie from its always sunny by the time you're done, unless you do it outdoors lol
