Tyranids versus Black Templars, Fight Club rules.

It was to be my first ever battle. I had painted a few Tyranids way back when but after I moved they gathered dust in a box for a very long time.

Recently, I unearthed them and started adding new ones and studying the new Codex and the new Rules.

Now Fight Club is what the FLGS runs every week to allow for new players to get playing earlier without needing to build up a whole army first. A very good idea indeed, as it will still be a while until my first target 1.5K army will be done. But this allowed me to at least start having games with the army partially done!

Now in Fight Club, the rules are amended as follows:
1) Troop composition is 1 HQ, 1 Troop and 1 Anything.
2) Points don't matter.
3) Table size is a half table.
4) BRB objectives don't count.
5) Every army gets a primary and a secondary objective, randomly drawn from a stack of objective cards. If the armies are not of similar size, the bigger army draws a primary from a deck with more difficult objectives to even things out. Primary objective is 3 points, Secondary is 1 point.

For this, my first real game, I took:

HQ: Hive Tyrant with 2 Twin Linked Devourers and a single Tyrant Guard.
Troops: 16 termagants.
Other: Carnifex with Bio-plasma.
Total: 545 points.

I tried reconstituting my opponent's list as well as I could, I didn't have a written version of it after the game.

HQ: High Marshal Helbrecht with a command squad retinue, 6 Initiates and 2 Neophytes, a Missile Launcher and a Plasma Gun.
Troops: A Crusader Squad, 6 Initiates and 2 Nepohytes, a Missile Launcher and a Flamer. They also get a Drop Pod with a Deathwind Missile Launcher.
Other: Emperor's Champion.
Total: As near as I can tell, that's a whopping 656 points.

The advantage looks to be with the Marines at first sight as they are 110 pojnts bigger.

I draw my objectives and get:

Primary: Challenge the enemy warlord in CC.
Secondary: Destroy an enemy unit in shooting.

Pre-game thoughts:

That's quite a few marines. However I have every confidence in my bugs. I have two MCs and he should struggle putting them down. In addition my primary looks simple enough, if his warlord (The Emperor's Champion) gets anywhere near my Tyrant, it is what I would have done anyway. Shooting a unit to death will be tricky though. Shooting is not exactly my best weapon here as my Carnifex is clearly built for CC...

Psyker Powers: Tyrant swaps out for Biomancy, gets Iron Arm and Leech Essence.

Warlord Traits:
Mine: When any of his units is with 12" of my Warlord, they must use their lowest Leadership value.
His: I don't remember, but it had no effect whatsoever.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The Marines won the roll for first deployment and set up first.

Only the High Marshal and his retinue start on-board, in a piece of terrain deep in his table half:

My Carnifex is setup opposite the Marine Squad, trying to hide in some bushes:

The rest of my bugs set-up diagonally across the table, hiding behind the big central hill and some crates left behind by who knows who. Do note the one unpainted Termagant... I thought I had 16 of them from years ago, but apparently one has gone AWOL. So I literally assembled one minutes before heading to the FLGS. I know I know I swore I would not play with unpained models, but this was an emergency. My list said 16, I was going to take 16.

This does leave the Carnifex outside of Synapse but he's a big boy, he can look after himself. And go have a friendly chat with very sociable looking marines across the table.

Overview of the deployment, the Carnifex's claws are just barely visible on the left:

The Tyranids try to seize the initiative, but fail. Ah well, that was just a 1 in 6 chance anyway. With everything setup, Hive Fleet Bak Kut Teh is now ready to face the bolter music and slay some marines!

Re:Tyranids versus Black Templars, Fight Club rules.

Templars turn one.

The squad that is already on the table stays put.

Much to my surprise (I didn't know Drop Pods could do that...), the one Drop Pod crashes near my lines. It scatters a bit but its scatter is limited by bumping into terrain.

The marines spill out of their drop pod and set up in battle formation facing my termagants and the Tyrant.

The bolters, shotguns, flamer, missile launcher and Deathwind Launcher all fire upon my poor hapless Termagants, and somehow, only 7 of them die.

It looks a bit foggy though, maybe that threw the Templar's aim off.

In the meantime, the Marine Squad on the other side of the table fires a Krak Missile at my Carnifex, which misses.

Tyranid turn one:

The carnifex starts advancing towards the marines on the other side of the table. In spite of running it can't quite make it from one patch of area terrain to the next and now stands in open terrain.

The Hive Tyrant Iron Arms himself and will do so every turn, he spent most of the time at toughness 8.

The Hive Tyrant and the Termagants in the meantime turn their attention to the squad led by the Emperor's Champion:

Tyranid fire is a bit more accurate than the fire we saw previously from the Marines and where once there were 9, now there are 5:

Due to the warlord trait and the Devourers having scored hits and a single one of the two Neophytes being alive, the marines check morale against 6 under the living torrent of fire, and run.

Unfortunately, that puts them quite far away from my Hive Tyrant now. I try to charge both the Termagants and the Hive Tyrant and Guard, but only the Termagants make it.

The marines actually kill 5 termagants, leaving me with just 4. The 4 termagants still succeed at putting down the remaining Neophyte.

The Emperor's Champion can't be the Warlord, it's in the Black Templars FAQ. Helbrecht's Command Squad also has to take Furious Charge for 3 points per model as per Helbrecht's special rules.

Gotta say though, your list was probably way better than his, despite you having less points. As you correctly noted, he's got almost nothing to counter your MCs, especially not seeing as one of them got Iron Arm.

Heh well it was the first game for the both of us, we did make a few mistakes along the way.

The second game I played which I'll chronicle when this is done, was against a more experienced player and went a lot smoother. It looks like he does!

That explains why fitting the head in was a bit difficult I suppose...

And yeah this system could be utterly abused of course. Nothing would have stopped me from taking for instance every single possible option on the Tyrant just for the heck of it. Or any of the mad lists noted above.

The Fight Club games are not meant to be proper competition though, they're really meant for easing new players into the game. So far I haven't seen anyone really abusing it in such a way at least.

Next turns coming up later today....

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The number of pictures will go down dramatically now I'm afraid as the store clerk taking the pictures had to take care of some other customers as well. During the first turn we were alone in the store so he took a lot then...

Black Templars: Turn 2.

Marshal Helbrecht's squad is still staying put. The missile launcher does score a hit with a krak missile this time, and takes a wound off of my carnifex.

The close combat between the Emperor's champion squad and the termagants continues. Two more termagants die from the attacks of the 4 remaining marines, no marines are killed this round.

Tyranids, turn 2:

The Carnifex is unfazed, and keeps advancing towards the marines on his side of the board, he makes it back into area terrain, the big crater. As he is still out of bioplasma range, he also runs and ends up here:

On the other side, Stefan the Hive Tyrant and Elise the Tyrant guard charge into the melee between the Termagants and the Emperor's Champion's squad. Stefan issues a challenge and the Champion accepts.

As the Tyrant charged through the boxes, he's striking at initiative 1, so the Champion gets to swing first. He puts a single wound on the Tyrant and then takes a wound in return from the Tyrant I think. What I do remember for sure is that the Champion did survive this turn. That however satisfied my primary objective! Yay Tyranids! Only the secondary to go now...

The Tyrant guard also kills a single marine thanks to rending, and one more Termagant is squished by the marines. There are now 2 marines, the Emperor's champion, one termagant, one Tyrant Guard and a Hive Tyrant remaining in that melee.

Black Templars turn 3:

Marshal Helbrecht has started advancing towards the carnifex. Bolter fire bounces of harmlessly, the Missile Launcer sees a krak missile throw up a shower of dirt and sand as it explodes harmlessly in the edge of the crater. However Helbrecht is within grenade range and hits the carnifex with a Holy Orb of Antioch. Carnifex loses a second wound and is down to two.

In the ongoing melee, my Hive Tyrant squishes the Emperor's Champion. No further casualties.

Tyranid turn 3:

The Carnifex passes his Instinctive behaviour roll this turn and keeps marching through the muck, straight towards Marshal Helbrecht.

He ends up right at the edge of the crater here:

He's actually right at the edge of the crater, where the black die is, but the model just wouldn't balance there...

The Carnifex lets out a screaming piercing shriek as he stares down the marines...

and belches out a ball of plasma! Which sails harmlessly over the marines' heads.

The Carnifex is so confused that he missed, that he forgets to storm into the marines to bowl them over. Or rather, missed his charge distance roll. Overwatch all missed or bounced of as well.

On the other side, the Hive Tyrant Iron Arms for 9 this time, then pounds the two remaining marines into the dust. Survivors on that half of the board are now the Tyrant, his guard, a lone termagant and the Drop Pod.

Deshkar: I only started playing in April and I spent a month outside the country in between

I like having a chance to testrun my units as I finish them this way though, it gives me a bit of a feel what they are like before the whole army I have planned is done. And get used to the rules and using them. Meh I just feel I paint too slow so this gives me a shot at having some fun with the bugs when only a few are done

So I will do a couple more of these until I finish painting my current shopping list of 'Nids.

Tyranids versus Black Templars, Fight Club rules.

The first rule of this Fight Club is actually... Talk about Fight Club.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Black Templars turn 4:

Helbrecht detaches from his retinue and moves towards the Carnifex, the squad itself doesn't move.

The Drop Pod still has its Deathwind launcher and this time actually hits. The Tyrant and Guard are unaffected, toughness 9 helps
My sole remaining Termagant however is splattered over the landscape.

The retinue shoots at the Carnifex, once again all fire either misses or pings off the Carnifex's tough hide. Even better, the plasmagunner blows himself up. Helbrecht however throws another holy handgrenade and the Fex is now down to one wound..

The Marshal then charges the Carnifex:

Both strike at I1. The Carnifex scores.... 1 HIT! But apparently Helbrecht had Eternal Warrior somehow so he lives. Helbrecht hits once as well and...

*POOF*

No more Mr. Carnifex...

Tyranid Turn 4:

The Hive Tyrant and the Guard simply start moving around the hill to go and attack the remaining marines. I can't get in range this turn though, so the Tyrant shoots the Drop Pod, but takes only 1 Hull Point off.

Templars Turn 5:

Helbrecht and the squad move towards the Tyrant. Only the Missile Launcher is in range and it misses on a snapshot. Note that Helbrecht is still walking around on his own..

Tyranids Turn 5:

I still need my secondary objective, shoot a unit dead. Helbrecht is just standing there on his own so the Tyrant moves closer and fires all those devourer shots...

to no effect whatsoever!

We check to see whether the game ends and... We get another turn as well.

Templars Turn 6:

My opponent realizes he doesn't actually need to come fight my Tyrant to hit his objectives. Helbrecht rejoins the retinue and they start moving and running towards my deployment zone, where the Carnifex started the game.

Tyranids Turn 6:

I realize I still need to shoot something and taking out the whole squad whilst they run away probably won't work. The Tyrant turns back towards the drop pod.

The drop pod just barely gets cover from the intervening terrain and boxes. My tyrant fires and takes off... 1 Hull point. It still has 1 left!

I really need the game to continue another turn here. I don't really understand how Brain Eating wurms can kill a big metal box that came falling out of orbit, but no matter. I want to shoot it again!

So we roll to see whether we have a turn 7....

*drumroll*

We do!

Templars Turn 7:

The templars move and run into my deployment zone. They can't even see the Tyrant any more due to the big intervening hill, so no fire.

Tyranids Turn 7:

Hive Tyrant moves closer to the Drop Pod so it doesn't have cover any more.

I take the 12 dice and roll, 7 of them hit. I reroll the 5 misses, for another 4 hits. Now surely I can roll a single 6 on 11 dice. Right?

I pick them up and roll. At first sight? 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s... No six. But we see only ten dice. One of them rolled through the drop pod somehow, out of LOS. We go check it and.... It's a 6 Drop pod destroyed, objective hit.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
So time to see who had what objectives and what was achieved...

Tyranid Primary: Challenge the enemy warlord in CC. Done, he was challenged and pummeled to a pulp. That second bit wasn't even necessary but the baby Rippers at home sure enjoyed the Champion Pulp they had for dinner.

Tyranid Secondary: Shoot a unit dead. The Drop Pod, just barely.

Templars secondary... Have no units left in his own deployment zone. That was clearly accomplished.

Templars Primary: Have a surviving troops choice inside my deployment zone.
We counted it as achieved then, but I realized when I try to figure out exactly what the list was, the guys accompanying Helbrecht must have been his retinue. And hence they should have counted as HQ I think.

But we ruled it a Draw then and that is how it goes in my books.

As for my units, I was happy with them.

The Termagants got a bit lucky when they only lost about half their number to those first shots when the drop pod landed, and afterwards got the Champion's unit locked in combat so my HT could easily get to them in turn 2 and achieve my primary. Otherwise, who knows, they might have tried staying away from the HT.

Also Iron Arm rules, especially as it effectively also boosts the Toughness of the one Tyrant Guard. Those two didn't get very often to begin with, and other than the one wound from CC with the Champion, they were both unscathed. In addition the HT was the one getting both my objectives done. So yup, I like my Tyrant Even with his upside down shell.. The only disappointment would have been that it took 3 full rounds of shooting to destroy that pod. I had thought that 12 Twin-Linked S6 shots would have gotten that done faster. In fact, if it hadn't been for my secondary objective, I would have charged the pod immediately after the marines near it were wiped out and smashed it to bits, but... It needed to die from shooting.

And finally, good old Carni did what he was supposed to as well. Keep those guys around Helbrecht busy. That unit, 2/3rds of his army in points, spent most of the game trying to kill the Carnifex and only just barely succeeding. So yes Carnifex only got only a single hit in. It doesn't matter, he did his job regardless..

After that it was time for me to get some new models, paint them up and let Hive Fleet Bak Kut Teh loose on the world again, in another batrep..

Automatically Appended Next Post:

Mutter wrote:
Those rules are crazy ... O.o

You could put down:
- Hive Tyrant with three Tyrant Guard
- 9 Warriors
- Brood of 3 Carnifexes

With upgrades, that's almost 1850 points ...

Do note though, there is a stack of objective cards for the smaller army, similar armies, bigger armies and there is one objective card called "The kitchen sink".

I suspect that objective is "Table the opponent without losing a single unit"

Re:Tyranids versus Black Templars, Fight Club rules.

I like the concept, although, as noted, there is a possibility for abuse.

The important thing about "fight club" rules is that it's a place for new players to get started faster, and that's what makes it great.

I think it's unlikely that an experienced player would show up pretending to be a newb, then drop a cheese bomb, but human nature being what it is...

The LGS staff has to pay attention: if they see someone talking like a new player, and acting like a vet, then they need to call him on it.

Ideally, somebody who has been playing since 3rd then steps in as an ally with the newbie player who is actually a newbie, brings a 500 point deathstar to the table, and proceeds to slap the gak out of the pretender!
