Weathering Articles

Hi, all.

I'm soon to start painting, for the very first time, the vehicles of my Imperial Guard army - very excited at the prospect, but a little worried at the same time.

It's ambitious, granted, but what I want to do is to weather my vehicles; if I can, I want to make them look like a decades, and maybe centries old war machine.

As I say, it's ambitious, as I've never painted vehicles before, but can anyone recomend, or link me, to a few decent articles on how to weather vehicles?

Many thanks, fellow Dakkaians.

Re:Weathering Articles

I've done a little weathering before and I find that drybrushing works well. I haven't really weathered any vehicles before but armour and clothes on troops I have. For blacks I have used tyrant skull as I feel it gives a good weathered look but I guess you want something that looks as though the actual colour has faded revealing the material below. I've heard people say before that you can do weathering by drybrushing the model the same as the drybrush colour used on the based. A good technique that would be good for vehicles though I guess would be to simulate chips in the paint work of the vehicle. I do this on some weapons by using a black as the basecoat the chip the layer it with a dark silver (GW's ironbreaker works well) then if you want layer it again with a lighter silver. This emulates the look of of paintwork that has been worn down which reveals the metal below. Hope that this helps slightly
