Ours did come first, though not by much. I'm going to guess you've heard of Ricky Gervais...? It's his brainchild - in fact, it's what made him famous.

I may not be speaking from a position of strength here, as I can't stand either version, it's just not my idea of *funny*. But I hear from my fellow Britishers that the US version, while passable, just isn't the same - and it's largely down to the people in charge not getting the type of humour. a) It had Ricky Gervais
b) It wasn't that funny
c) When you spend your day in a job surrounded by co-workers like the characters in the show you need a break from that level of stupid.

Regarding the Office. If I wanted to sit through an hour of watching people crack bad jokes and be socially awkward, I'd be happy to be at work. It's the same reason why I can't watch Office Space anymore. It feels like it's one of those shows that's only meant to be enjoyed by the people who don't live it. Kind of like Big Bang Theory.

And I mean, at least the IT Crowd is at least marginally funny sometimes.

Had to work for an English boss who was a big fan of it.
(unfortunately, this then made the show look like a reality tv show in comparison.)

Exactly my kind of humour, and with just two seasons and movie it lasted exactly as long as it should.

I have seen a bit of the US version and I thought it was pretty good as well. In fact, in a few ways it improved on the UK version, as it better developed the supporting characters. But it went on for what seemed like forever, and so I kind of lost interest over time. And it was never as excruciatingly cruel as the UK version. Only seen a couple of the US episodes. Not out of snobbery or anything I just haven’t had time to watch them. I do mean to at some point and the ones I've seen I do like.

That said I'm not sure I could watch it again as some scenes are so painfully awkward that it's almost uncomfortable.

Love the US version. The entire first season is cringe worthy and felt like they were trying to recreate the British office and didn't have a plan to do their own thing. Season 2 on was gold. And while it's also awkward like the British version from time to time Carrell's character never took it as far as Gervais (not sure if that was intentional or not). And it's got an overall lighter tone and the way they grew the non-main characters was excellent.

No one is saying you have to do any of that. I only watched a few episodes of season one and didn't pick up the show till years later. I rented season 2 and started watching from there and enjoyed the show immensely. But that's my opinion and the show isn't for everyone.

That said it's also important to note that it very nearly didn't make it out of season 1. And if it wasn't for the strength of the English version and an heavy move by the online community it wouldn't have. Some sitcoms take some time to find their groove. The Office certainly didn't have that season 1.

And I think it's a bit unfair to compare The Office to Arrested Development. Arrested Development had an insane amount of talent and a direction from the start. I'd recommended to anybody starting out to start with one of the better stand alone stories. "The Carpet" or "Michael's Birthday" are both good starts. If you don't like it, you dont' like it.

I tried watching the UK version... I couldn't get through an episode. Improv and stand up comedy are two different skills, and one can be good at one and terrible at the other. That's a valid point, but this wasn't early in his career either, he could have dusted off some old material (which is pretty much par for the course on the show he was on).
