Hi everyone, ive been going through Death Korps of krieg and their background for my army and i know that they dont use ab humans or conscripts or penal legions for various reasons which i know, but does anyone know the reason why death Korps of krieg wouldnt use Manticores?? Or am I wrong and they actually do/ use them according to their backround??

They do. The first example Manticore scheme in Imperial Armour volume 1 (both editions) is from the Krieg 22nd Armoured Regiment.

I don't know about the Assault Korps list in IA12, but the Krieg list from IA5 is specifically a Siege Regiment list - its possible Krieg doctrine only uses Manticores in support of massed armoured assaults not infantry engagements.

Death Korps of Krieg and their fluff

The Death Korps of Krieg take more artillery to war than anyone else, especially their Siege Regiments. However I'd think that SerQuintus is probably on the money with the Manticore that it'd most likely be found amidst a Death Korps armoured regiment - the Siege Regiments fight long, protracted battles based around attrition where it'd be better to have static artillery pieces, such as Earthshaker cannon on mounts, than self-propelled pieces like Manticores etc.

HOWEVER! There's nothing to stop you from utilising a Manticore with your Death Korps if they're not an armoured regiment - perhaps it's attached to your regiment or it was rescued, preventing it from falling into enemy hands or it belonged to another regiment from another world who were wiped out & your Death Korps got ahold of their artillery pieces including, dun-dun-daaaah, a Manticore or two. If you feel you need to justify the units inclusion in your army's background then just find a simple reason as to why they have it.

Manticore's are rare and valuable. Krieg regiments are rather expendable with their focus on attrition warfare and the disaster that is trench warfare.

Could also be that Kreig doesn't manufacture any manticores. The Kreig regiments are only going to be armed with whatever kreig can produce and the Mechanicus are famous for not sharing knowledge around.

I would imagine it is due to the limited ammo nature of the weapon. Krieg style warfare is a war of attrition with their weapons firing over and over in a protracted war. Missiles overall tend to be a high impact, shock and awe style weapon.

Additionally the Krieg forces seem to be poorly supplied once they are on the battlefield where they tend to bring extra ammo in their trojans (in which the missile would not fit). Replacing missiles all the time would be much more difficult than replacing an earthshaker shell (look at the size difference then imagine shipping those out to the front line).

I think it all comes down to logistics. Krieg tends to settle in for the long haul, bombarding the enemies for months or years. Shells are much easier to transport (and cheaper to manufacture) than missiles, so a protracted artillery bombardment wouldn't work well for Manticores. I do think it makes sense that they might have a few in reserve that they dust off for the extra strong bombardment right before the infantry go over the top.

Actually, they could load them with Sky Eagle missiles and keep them as AA sentries, then swap for Storm Eagles when they know they'll be attacking soon.

Thanks everyone for your input, i am going to keep my manticores and use them in support of my armored companies, i agree with alot of the arguments posted so far and will be using my manticores when i field my tank companies, when a large assault is taking place in a campaign or apoc game, they will be more of a short term support. Other than that ill be using basilisks, heavy mortars, medusas, thud guns and etc. to support my infantry while no "big push" is taking place.
thanks again everyone!

So to bring up this idea again, going around and looking at other DKOK armies . i keep seeing people using ogryns and using green stuff to make gas masks and using them with DKOK. From what i know and have heard DKOK hate abhumans and would rather use them as target practice then fight alongside them...
any thoughts??
also the same issue with conscripts and penal legions
Penal legions?? men who have done wrong against the emperor, that doesnt go well with DKOK, On vraks they were used to dig their trenches, and set minefields and razor wire but i dont remember anything about them being aloud to fight...
conscripts ?? Kriegsman prove themselves fit to be a guardsmen when they fight on the surface of their planet not in a white-shield platoon...
if Im wrong please correct me
thanks for reading!
Tony A

You are correct using ab humans in a DKoK regiment list is a corruption of the fluff.

Using conscripts or penal legion is a little less so as the DKoK have half trained soldiers and penal legion workers that could theoretically be fielded if the situation was dire enough. It would definitely be non standard though.

You could however say they were a special detachment from another non DKoK regiment.
Yeah i could see that happening with the conscripts being from another army as a detachment.
as for the penal legionaries i can see them taking up arms as a position gets overrun to try and hold the line.
i like the points you made, thanks for responding
Tony A
