Female Inquisitor #2 - my third commission

To view other commission work I've done, click here.

After seeing my work done on making a female inquisitor for someone at my local gaming store, another of our regular players decided that he wanted one as well. He had a limitless bitz supply of CSM stuff (his primary army), which he would let me gorge myself on as payment. How convenient given that I'm just restarting my own CSM army.

He had a pretty good idea of what he wanted, and supplied me with the bitz to make it happen. What he wanted was an inquisitor in power armor with a demon blade and a hellrifle.

The base of the model would be one of the Daughters of the Flame from Warmachine (32mm being basically the same as 28mm heroic):

This model was a good choice to start with, especially since it's already mostly covered with plate armor. The client wanted me to make the armor go all the way around (the greaves only cover the front of the shins, for example), which was a pretty simple matter of covering over the chainmail and cloth straps part and then adding a lip to make it look like proper armor.

But that wasn't all. The client also gave me some more bitz to flesh it out, including a power backpack and a couple of dark eldar arms. The best part about the latter is that they already are armored. Very little work would have to be done with them. He then also let me rummage through his bitz to pick out some things to make a hellrifle with. That sorted, it was time to get to work.

I started by doing a bit of knifework to hack down the back of the model a bit in order for the power pack to fit on. In the end, the backpack was just too big, so I carefully cut it in half, removed about a millimeter (or maybe a bit more) and glued it back together. This shortened backpack fit right in. All I had to do was to GS the back of the hood back into place.

As for the demon weapon, the client actually liked the idea of it being a blade on a chain, so I just straight glued that arm into place.

Then, after fixing the armor as described above, it was sort of just a matter for the hell rifle. I'd use the arm and hand holding trigger, and the buttstock, but what to do? Firstly, it's a heavy weapon. That means it should look much more like a sniper rifle, and much less like a bolt gun. Secondly, it says it fire shards of demonic essense and looks embellished, so I liked the idea of prominently using the CSM bolter.

In the end, I kind of tinkered and messed with it, and got something close enough. Once there, though, it just sort of looked like a sniper rifle. It needed something more to make it look... arcane and fancy. As such, I threw on a piece of guitar wire to act as hosing. Something either needs to be added to the round before it leaves the barrel, or something needs to be siphoned off to prevent the weapon from ruining itself. After a few tries, I decided to use a larger gauge wire than I usually would have to make it look more awkward and obscene. Like a demon weapon. In the end, I think I went a bit overboard, but the client liked it, so that was that. To fill space, I also added a pouch and scroll bit from the GK sprue to the inside of the gun. The joke is that it's so complicated to use and maintain, that it comes with its own tool kit and instruction manual.

I'd got it to the point where I was almost done, and something didn't seem QUITE right about it. I decided that what it needed was shoulderpads to complete the 40k motif, so I dug out a pair from the imperial guard tank sprue (they get just free-floating flak armor pads). I shaved the skull off of one of them, and carved the inquisitorial symbol into the other and slapped them on. That little chance was all that was needed. Both the client and myself were satisfied with the result.

I think what really shocks me the most is just how much like a sister of battle this model looks like. The shoulderpads and backpack really sell it as power armor with very little else changed.

The task complete, I got to spend the next half hour sifting through stuff, getting a bunch of bitz that the client would have no use whatsoever of, like the warp talon claws from a box of raptors, and the bolters from a CSM squad put together with BPs and chainswords. Nothing terribly fancy, but as many random CSM bitz as I'm likely to need.

Looks spectacular. Are you going to paint it or was the commission just for the modeling?

I also like that Warmachine has some useable models for conversions. Really widens the pool of bitz.

Femal Inquisitor #2 - my third commission

Just the modelling. The client in this case really likes to do his painting.

And the hellrifle is neat, but I kind of wish I'd spent a bit more time on it. I was in a rush, but I feel like I could have added more detail, especially where the brass rod joins the rest of the rifle. So it goes.

And yeah, the one I did before this was with an infinity miniature. They convert pretty well into the world of 40k.
