No other gold paint covers the same; one coat, plus a little extra to for a few thin spots, and you're done. Yes, it's alcohol based, and take a tiny bit of practice to use, but it is worth it when you see the result.

Vallejo Model Air metallics is a distant second for base coating for gold. I didn't get on too well with Tamiya paints before, but I might give them another shot. (I don't like their screw tops tough, if they still have those).

The Vallejo ones sound good, and I use Vallejo model colour as my normal paints now anyway. How do their water soluble hold up to old Citadel?

Vallejo Liquid Gold really can't be beat, especially for the golds. In short - several of the major paints are quite good but Vallejo Model Colour was the easiest and best after all my research. Vallejo Model Air colors are nice but separate WAY too easily and after a very short period they are basically all silver; as the copper, gold, brass, etc pigments separate - but that silver is damned smooth hah. Andrea's were also awesome...
