Tips on using Minitaire Ghost Tints?

Got my set the other day, and finally used them. Based on my experience, when pre-shading prior to the tints, it seems to be necessary to exaggerate the highlights to make sure they show up well at gaming distance. I also had trouble finding a psi setting that was reliable. Do those of you who use these find they work better on a higher or lower setting? This I think also contributed to my trouble keeping them where I wanted them. It wasn't bad, but my flamestorm cannons have a bit more scorching than I'd planned! I was bummed the purple doesn't show with the brown for extra cool scorching. Over all, it looks great, and is much easier than the multiple layer method I used previously.

I also used them to paint Loki, my Thousand Sons Sorcerer/Lord. He's the DV model. I first painted him a mix of black and Tamiya bare aluminum. Then zenithial highlighting with straight Aluminum, and a Nuln Oil wash to darken the shading. After the blue on him, the shading is visible, just not as dramatic as I'd have liked. I could have got lighter on the blue, but not too much or I'd not have got the vividness I wanted. His cape is roughly the same, while I think it looks good, some of the shading is lost at gaming distance.

Any tips to address these minor issues? Is it necessary to give a coat of matte or satin varnish over them to paint on top of them? Any other general advice? I really love these tints, trying to find more excuses to use them!

There's some good videos if you haven't seen them. I have the minitaire set but haven't used the ghost tints much yet so can't offer any advice. Orcpainternerd and Ichiban both have some good videos that might show where you can improve with them. Specifically this and this.

Tips on using Minitaire Ghost Tints?

Thank for those videos.

I'm going to go home and start over on the cape. I'm going to base it in white, or maybe pale grey, then shade and highlight very starkly before spraying the tints in thin layers allowing them to dry in between.

Any recommendations on psi? Lower, as high as normal? For what it's worth, I'm using a Patriot with a fine needle.
