Advise on capturing this scheme:

Hello all, my wife and I are thinking of starting a third army and are leaning towards Tau or SM. The scheme I'd like to use for either almost exactly like this:

Id love advice on going about this. It seems like theres metalic bases obviously, but is this sponging or drybrushing of gray that I see that creates the weathered metal look?

Any tips or strategy to go about this would be much appreciated, Ive got some old battletech mini's I can experiment on.

You could either prime black and then sponge on the metal, or spray metal (there are plenty of sprays to choose from for doing this) and then either sponge on a darker metalic and then a black at the edges, or go straight for the black. Put a light sepia wash over all the brassy sections, then a light black wash over everything just to tie it all together.

Maybe dust some rust weathering powder into the recesses for good measure, clean from the surfaces, then fix with alcohol, or varnish.

You could ask Forge World how they did it. They are usually very good about answering these kinds of technical questions during the downtime that crops up between their painting & modeling books.

I guess my eyes are seeing the darker base on the bottom and weathering done second, as opposed to vice versa. Ill have to give it a shot, maybe emailing FW isnt a bad idea either.
