What is an appropriate waite time for a painting service to start on a project?

I'm curious as to what a good time frame is for a service to start work. I'm fairly new to this hobby, however for my 30'th birthday I decided to to invest into a couple figures that poke fun at me and my brothers army. There will be some conversion work done and the majority of the pieces seem to be easy to come by. I put in my deposit just over a month ago and have checked in by email every two weeks or so. I've invested a good some of money into these little plastic soldiers so I feel compelled to check on them every couple weeks until i get an update, or at least hear they've started. Yet when i do email them I feel like a nag. This isn't meant to make a service look bad nor am i upset with my experience so far, I just want to know what i should expect. Anyone with experience would be of great help, thank you.

Personally, as I have done some commission work years ago, when I took on a job it was because I wanted/needed something else to work on--and so I could start on it right away.

I knew/know my skills and how long it takes me to do an appropriate paint job, so I would always give a reasonable estimate (1 week, 2 weeks, etc).

Having said that....

I think a month, without communication, is unacceptable.

Did they tell you when they accepted the commission that there would be a delay getting started? Or give you a timeframe for completion?

The second of those is probably the most relevant, ultimately. It doesn't really matter when they start it so long as they complete it by whenever they said they would.

I believe standard completion time was 4-8 weeks average once they start. What i didnt ask and probably should have was an estimate on how long it would take to get to my project. They reply with in a day or two when i email them and i do trust them to get my project completed. I just feel like a nagging parent, basically i've invested a sum of money and its my duty to watch over that investment. I think i'll just have to wait another week or so and then ask for a time frame for the start of my project. Once i know there is a plan in place for it i'll be able to rest better at night knowing my investment was a good one.

Two months is too long. If the painting service is too busy they should not have taken the job. I take commissions in between my own models and have a fairly quick turn around as long as there is not too much conversions or anything special. I'd be pretty upset not hearing anything about my models.
