Warp Spiders: Would you rather use the normal jet pack or try for a Warp Jump?

So jet pack infantry can just go 12". But, warp jumps are 6+2D6". That averages 1" more than the normal jet pack jump. But is it worth risking the fact that you might completely fluff it up? In my opinion right now I would stick with the normal jump unless it would be very beneficial to make a leap of faith (eheh) with a warp jump, as long as the consequences of a bad jump are low.

Jetpack infantry can only move 6" a turn in the movement phase...not 12". Jump infantry moves 12" in the movement phase. You are confusing the two. So yes, all day long I'll warp jump in the movement phase as that puts my move between 6 -18". The risk is minimal...you only lose a model on doubles. Big deal. I'll take that while I can move 6-18" ignoring terrain...also taking into account that Warp Spiders have battle focus and get to move 2d6" again in the assault phase.

Re:Warp Spiders: Would you rather use the normal jet pack or try for a Warp Jump?

Jet Pack infantry move 6" in the movement phase and can thrust move 2d6" in the assault phase. They are relentless (which is important to some Tau units, where most jet pack infantry comes from).

Warp Jump is a special move that warp spiders can make going 6+2d6" in the movement phase ignoring dangerous terrain, but losing a model on doubles.

In the old codex, spiders did their warp jump in the assault phase. They had to declare a direction, jump 2d6" and lost a model in doubles. They were also jump infantry moving up to 12" in the movement phase.

Warp Spiders: Would you rather use the normal jet pack or try for a Warp Jump?

Real quick for you.

1) Warp Spider unit type was changed from JUMP infantry (examples include Space Marine Assault Marines) to JETPACK infantry (Most famous example are Tau Crisis Suits)

1a) As a result of this, Warp Spiders move exactly like Crisis Suits. Ie. 6 inch move and 2d6 assault jump.

2) The Warp Jump was moved to the movement phase, allowing Spiders to replace thier 6 inch move with a 6+2d6 + oops I accdentally sucked my Autarch into the warp because I rolled doubles and randomly selected him shenanigans.

Thus. a Squad of Warp Spiders can move

6+2d6 (Warp Jump) + d6 w/ re-roll and shooting (Run, Fleet, Battle Focus interplay) + 2d6 (Jet Pack Rules)

If you are still having trouble wrapping your head around this... 6+5d6 with a shot somewhere in there.

Warp Spiders: Would you rather use the normal jet pack or try for a Warp Jump?

At first I was upset about the change to jetpack.

Then the first time I played spiders I had to read the rule twice, that it's 6+2d6 and not just 2d6 inches. I rolled an 11 and my spiders moved 17", then ran another 3 inches in the shooting phase, killed a ravager, and jumped safely out of LoS all in one turn.

It's definitely a huge boost.

To answer the original question, if the 6" jetpack move will get you into range (bearing in mind that you get to run too) then don't risk the jump. But the whole point of warp spiders is that they can cross the table faster than anything to get at targets other units can't reach. I haven't actually ever *not* used warp jump yet when moving warp spiders. It seems like I always need them somewhere.

It's a 1 in 6 chance of losing a spider, no big deal. Safer than deepstriking.

To answer the OP's question, I use the Warp Jump....but with caution. If I can get into position using normal move, plus battle focus, then I won't warp jump. Typically, it goes like this: turn 1, warp jump and run across the board to get into shooting range of something I want to die. That thing dies or is badly wounded, then I assault jump out of its range for retaliation. Then I spend the rest of the game playing peek-a-boo using normal movement and battle focus, combined with assault jumps, to shoot things to pieces. If I need to, I'll warp jump to get myself to another target or to get away from other fast-movers.
