Looking for suggestions on making "beaten" or weathered metal look...

Ok, trying to work on a new scheme for some models, and wanted to hear some thoughts from some people on how you get this effect color affect seen here;

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Necrons/NECRON_NIGHT_SHROUD_BOMBER.html

Basically the metal look, but its very ....mottled? Or maybe to describe it more like a beaten metal?

I don't think it would be just with washes, but maybe some kind of dry brushing with dabbing a small sponge?

Any suggestions?

thank you in advice for your insights and ideas.

I think you already have the general idea. I would guess that they gave a metallic basecoat a heavy, overall wash, then went back and drybrushed/sponged the mottled wear and tear. Looks like they might have used two shades for the sponging - likely the original gunmetal and a lighter silver (in old Citadel terms, Boltgun and Mithril) - for extra variation, as well as keeping the effect relatively subtle on the darker shaded areas (i.e. only gunmetal in the shadows, more silver on the high points).

Hmmm.

I was wondering if it were more sophisticated than that.

Thanks for at least affirming that maybe I am headed in the right direction.

Any other ideas out there?
