C&C - First paint jobs! - Necron Warrior and Customized Canoptek Scarab Swarm

Hello all,

I finally got to finish assembling my Mk.II Necron Battleforce today, and got creative when assembling one of my Scarab Swarms. I didn't like the look of the default "floating/pogo stick" bases, so I trimmed them down some and got to arranging them so they looked unique. Then I had the bright idea to stick some extra bits I had lying around in the middle of the swarm so it looks like the Scarabs are eating a Space Marine!

Additionally, I painted my first Necron Warrior as well, and I'm quite proud of it! I primed it in a cheap $1 Walmart bottle of matte black spray paint, then added on some Citadel Mithril Silver and Citadel Liche Purple. The green is just a standard "light green" Reeve's brand acrylic paint. Finally, I finished it off with modeling sand and some red Reeve's paint.

So what do you guys think? How'd I do for a first time painter? C&C welcome and appreciated.

- Anrakyr

I would say to throw a few washes on your stuff.

The space marine being eaten could use some details, he has a rope and a gem or something on his arm, maybe painting those a different color would make it pop more.

The picture of the warrior looks a little blurry, it looks like the chest and head are not painted, is that the Mithrill?

Nice start though! Good luck on getting everything else together and painted!

I didn't realize the Warrior pic was so blurry , but I was having problems with my camera flash at the time. His head and chest are indeed coated in the mithril. I'm gonna go back and touch him up as well as the scarabs later on when I get the chance (my painting has been delayed for about a week by some kind of flu-bug).

Any advice as to what kind of wash I should use? My Games Workshop painting supplies are all 2nd hand since I've been buying large lots of Warhammer stuff on Craigslist and Ebay and just re-selling what I don't plan on keeping. The only wash I have right now is a flesh color for some Imperial Guards that my buddy is going to buy off me.

I've tried reading about making home made washes, but there are so many different opinions and methods that I don't know which ones work. I'll probably venture up to my local hobby store where they sell citadel paints/washes fairly cheap once I'm feeling up to it.

If you can get hold of the old "armour wash" that might work, I think it's a bit metallic, otherwise a standard black wash from the new GW range should work on metals? You could also try a purple wash if you wanted. That might compliment the rest of the purple in the model?

I like the idea for the scarabs though, bases with a bit of something going on are always fun to look at on the board. Just needs flock or sand to finish it, maybe some wash and highlights too.

Looks like a good start to, I'm sure there will be some Necron paint vids on YouTube too for extra help, I find these helpful.
