Armour Colours??

What actually happened when the loyalists turned chaos? Why did their armour change colour? Did they sit there and hand-paint it, or did the warp change it? Just kind of been thinking about this for a while and not come up with a reasonable answer xD

Armour Colours??

Many of the Traitor Legionaries and later renegade Space Marines personally defile and mutilate their armour, destroying old Chapter symbols and Imperial icons to symbolically cement their rejection of their oaths and loyalties to the Emperor.

In that context there is no reason not to suppose that any such renegade would not repaint his own armour and wargear and personalise it to represent his new allegiances and path. Psychologically, actually painting over his old colours would be a big step for a Marine considering the psycho-conditioning and indoctrination he will have undergone. Painting over his colours would be a significant event and almost certainly something he would choose to do for himself.

In the case of the World Eaters they reforged their armour at the foot of Khornes throne.

The Deathguard just got dirtier. I don't think they actually painted green over the white.

The Word Bearers had new marks made just before the launch of the Abyss. It went from gray to crimson, perhaps a sign of trust between the rebel mechanicus and the Word Bearers.

The Thousand Sons probably changed through warp influence. I often believed that it was just a mistake made in the HH artwork early on and they just stuck with it.

The Alpha Legion just seems to be a retcon problem.

The Space Wolves just seemed to have run out of Fortress Grey and had to mix a few colors until they almost got it right.

The Dark Angels tried to look less emo and ended up looking like servants of the Wizard of Oz.

The Black Legion is clearly explained.

The Night Lords, White Scars, Ultramarines, Salamanders, Imperial Fists, Iron Warriors, Iron Hands, Emperors Children, Blood Angels and Raven Guard haven't changed all that much.

Beneath the gore a World Eater might still have white and blue armour.

First remember that back in 30k, only the Emperor's children got to wear the two headed eagle on their chest, so most space marines didnt have to do too much defacing of their armor as it only carried their legions insignia.

Well then think of it this way:
The iron warriors and night lords did not change their armor at all. If they look different from how they did 10,000 years ago it is because they had to find replacement parts. The iron warriors may have added more skulls and defaced some imperial symbols while adding others but really they embraced chaos mostly out of hatred for the emperor and bitterness at the rest of humanity. The night lords dont really worship chaos at all and they are just doing their own thing. They were already about the terror tactics.

The alpha legion repainted their armor to impersonate whatever legion/chapter they are infiltrating. If you see real alpha legion colors off in the distance it is probably cardboard cutout decoys. They repainted their armor to mask themselves as their targets changed.

The Deathguard did not repaint their armor. They are still wearing pure white armor underneath all the slime, bile and puss. If they replace parts or build new vehicles i doubt they would bother to paint them at all.

The sons of horus painted themselves black when horus died. This wasnt their step to damnation, it was putting on black to attend a funeral.

The word bearers definitely chose to repaint their armor enmass to change their allegence and make it known. They were the first to be corrupted and took the most deliberate approach to it.

The world eaters at first did not repaint their armor leaving it white but it got covered in blood and they liked it. They reforged their armor to take on khornes colors. Khorne the god of battle/blood/ and war is big on having uniform red and brass. They take their gear seriously and would repaint it as appropriate.

The Tsons did not repaint their armor. They still run around in red. Ahrimans faction changed to blue after getting outcast by Magnus.

Emperors children. Paint? why stop there? We got disco balls and laser lights...it is all about bling

Armour Colours??

I am aware of those issues and it should be noted that, aside from hazard stripes, the Iron Warriors armour is bare metal so no paint to change.

However, it can be said that the Traitor Legions colours require little change as they are the colours of traitors afterall! The re-painting of armour is perhaps more of an issue for later generations of Astartes rather than the original Traitor Legions.

There is no need though to fixate so obtusely on the very specific act of 're-painting'. The OP explained he struggled to envisage a chaos Marine spending time altering the appearance of his armour and the answer to that query is that a Marine's armour is more than just protection and equipment, it is the very mark of the Astartes, in the source material even it is said that a Marine without Power Armour is no Marine at all. The armour and its appearance, however minutely defaced, is hugely significant in-and-of itself to the wearer and any observer and why a Marine would do this personally.

A word on 40k's evolution: In 2nd edition all Khorne Berzerkers wore armour the colour of blood and brass because every one of them had daemon armour, so they didn't really get any say in the matter.
