Pryn Company Imperial Guard (including the unusual choice: Cavalry)

Pryn Company (Remnant) Imperial Guard force have been in retraining and resupply for the past two months. A long campaign against Orks has left a once large Imperial Guard Company as a small remnant force. For example what used to be hundreds of Cavalry is now just 30 Rough Riders.

Our first battle has led to victory... read our battle report here:

http://pryncompany.wordpress.com/2013/08/06/first-deployment-of-pryn-first-company-remnant/

I am new to posting here but hoping this is appropriate. I am very excited to be back playing 40k. I used to play 1st and 2nd edition and I know there are better Fast Attack options for Imperial Guard but I'm a very experienced strategy-game player and keen to try and win with an unusual choice of Rough Riders...

...they were the most fun units to paint and build during my crazy modelling-marathon that has seen me complete my 3000 point Imperial Guard army in under two months. Note, for this game I picked 1850 points for a tournament practice game with my friend Ian...

...my conclusions regarding Rough Riders from this first battle is that my opponent (even though he was not familiar with Rough Riders) realised they were fragile and saw a great opportunity to clear the board of some of my troops easily. However, it was interesting that it did mean other stuff was not being shot... and with nothing above AV12 and not many vehicles in my army, my opponent was often wasting his high-powered gun shots on low-point infantry/cavalry. Also, I started with 30 Cavalry and although two units were wiped out by the end of the game, one unit managed to get a charge and kill four Marines. Additionally because it was a scouring game the remaining unit was able to compete for victory points in the final round. I felt the Rough Riders were fun to play and genuinely helped me win.

I also think that Hydras are under-rated. I love that fact that they have two twin-linked autocannons: this means they can go at full speed (providing mobile cover) and still have a fair chance of one or two autocannon hits on a target even though snap-firing.

Hope you enjoy my battle report. It would be interesting to hear if anyone has any thoughts on the units I am using and how I could use them differently/better. Note, the "Rangers" are actually Penal Squads... I painted them in camo with rucksacks to "fluff" that they are infiltrating elite troops.

I don't know that there's a lot to comment on, seeing as how your battle report pretty much skipped the battle and just gave us a summary of the conditions and the conclusions. If you gave a turn-by-turn account of the battle, there would be more to comment on. I don't see comments on your list being much else than "that's cool and fluffy" or "why are you trying to have fun all your units are bad and you should feel bad"

If you decide to put greater detail into your battle reports, I look forward to reading them

lol ok it was my first game for years so I got distracted by rules and stuff... I ended up forgetting to take photos hence the lack of detail... I thought I would post it anyway as I want to battle report all my games and want to get into the habit... I'll photograph each turn next time and do a fuller report =)

Thanks for the feedback and thanks for looking =)

Oh, and I don't see my list as just fluffy. I'm trying to create a synergy between all my units and create an unusual but effective list. It may not work but let's see... that's one good win already! I'm off to do three month's volunteering soon but hope to do some tournaments when I get back.
