I want to better utilize the NM 's I5 so I'd like to make an assault squad.
Thinking 6 marines, add CCWs & VotLW, add doom siren & Claw champ and ride in a Rhino.
Disembark, rapid fire &template then either assault or throw up an overwatch.

The other option is to put them in a Land Raider with a Lord attached. Maybe extra bodies and FnP.

Thoughts? Advice?

Rhinos and assault units are a very bad mix. Having a unit that plops out of a transport and shoots a bunch of guns (because it can't assault) is not an assault unit.

If you want to do CC noise marines, I'd either do them on foot, en masse, or in a land raider with a slaanesh lord (or sorcerer). Doom siren plus dirge casters plus an optional witchfire followed up by an I5 charge with two characters (one with a fast weapon, the other with an Ap2 one) for challenge management sounds like it would do fine.

I don't know how much I'd bother with sonic weapons, apart from maybe just a blastmaster or just a couple of sonic blasters as backup weapons. I also don't know how much I'd bother taking them in a squad as small as 6. Just what were you anticipating beating in close combat with that few of models?

Maybe labeling them as assault was misleading. More of a close range squad compared to the max range shooting of Blastmasters.

Six was primarily an attempt to be fluffy with the idea that the champion was actually carrying the squad.

Put Lucius with Noise Marines for an extra Doom Siren. Add Huron to another squad for an extra Flamer template, or another character with the Burning Brand, or outflank a squad with a Slaanesh Lord on a steed.

Also nothing wrong with 10 Noise Marines stepping out of a Rhino to bolter something and then assault in the next turn. Give the Rhino a Dirge Caster and Combi Weapon as well for a nifty close in assault unit. CSM's with MoS can perform a similar role for a few points less but aren't fearless and will be missing out on the Doom Siren but can take 2x Flamers and a Combi-Flamer Champ.

I'd make use of Huron as a warlord with a CL to make NM troops. If you have other units like bikers and spawns to help draw fire too, you should have enough marines to make a dent next turn.
Assault Noise Marines

If you want close combat, then yes, noise marines proper are definitely better.

If you're just wanting a close-in firefight unit, then I guess I could see a smallish unit with sonic weapons. The idea would be that they'd get close and then flush weak infantry out of cover on objectives. In this case, though, I'd still take a land raider over a rhino, which will do nothing more than kill a couple of marines with an explosion and give your opponent first blood.

That, or I'd outflank them with a slaanesh lord. This would also give you the added benefit of having more punch in case the only thing in your opponent's backfield isn't just some weak infantry holding an objective. Given that he's kind of fast as well, and can split off and attack something else, you get more strategic advantages as well.

I'd agree, though, that taking noise marines just to plink with a blast master is a pretty bad waste of points. Just buy another helldrake, or give an HQ choice you're already bringing a burning brand. Or do some close combat, or something.

In any case, noise marines are an elites choice, and should be used as such. If you just want to plink with power armored models, then buy some havocs and be done with it.

If what you want is special weapons, take chosen or havocs or obliterators. Something that can put down more than a single non-torrent flamer shot.

Grey Templar wrote:I5 is a trap. There are things better than noise marines in close combat, but that doesn't mean that they're near the bottom of the pool. Having access to both FNP AND the ability to swing before, rather than concurrently, with most things in the game adds a great deal of durability. On a fearless unit.
Sure, but what's your complaint, then?

It's like saying that a squad of guardsmen without a meltagun costs 10 points less than a squad of guardsmen with a meltagun. So?

I usually roll with 2 or 3 NM squads in Rhinos with Bolter+BP+CCW, IoE, and a Champ with Doom Siren and PW. They're a pretty solid unit for grabbing objectives, providing mid/close range shooting, or even assaulting other units off of objectives. My usual plan of attack is to have them roll up next to an enemy squad, hit them with the Doom Siren, then next turn get out and hose them down again with the Siren and rapid fire boltguns, and if they're still standing the turn after that, fire the Siren again along with your pistols, and make your charge. Also with FnP, they can still at least make some save against all of the AP3/2 that seems to be in vogue.

That said, I wouldn't run them for the explicit intent of having them in assault. If you want a real choppy option, consider allying in some fluffy Slaanesh Daemon allies, a 20 (wo)man squad of Daemonettes for your troops along with a Herald of Slaanesh on a Steed with either the Grimoire of True Names for a 3++, or the Greater Aetherblade accompanied by 10-20 seekers, and maybe a Soul Grinder or a second squad of Daemonettes should do the trick. With their bonuses to movement, they can advance up the field rapidly, and with the massive amount of rending attacks they can dump out they'll tear units with 2+ saves apart, provided they don't get shot up by enemy fire on the way there.
