how to paint silver

I'm flattered that you would want to paint me in detail on your lizardmen, but it is really not required

I would pick an appropriate shade of silver paint - either very light and reflective, or slightly duller, then give it a light black wash just to add some shade and dimension to it.

Aaaand that is about it as far as painting silver goes. Unless you want to get into non-metalic metals or something like that, which I personally am not a fan of.

If the model itself is going to be blue then I might also mix in a very small amount of blue wash into the black to give the impression the silver is reflecting the skin of the warrior. A lighter silver would contrast well with a darker blue skin.

how to paint silver

I would go with a lighter silver as you can always darken it with more wash, or by mixing a little black into the paint (not directly in the pot - use a bit of plastic or gloss ceramic tile or an artists mixing pallete).

In terms of the wash... I don't know what their new paints are like as I don't have any. A blue ink (which I think is what their glaze paints are) would give a nice touch of gloss to the silver, which I think would be good. For the black I would not just use a watered down black paint - I would use an actual black wash. Sometimes a watered down paint looks
OK, but sometimes it can look gritty and splotchy when dry.

I might be tempted to go 2:1 black:blue, with the resulting mix going ~2:1 water:wash, but I would have to experiment to see what looked best.

But it isn't a wash (or as they call them now, a Shade) either. It's a technical paint, an actual black brush-on primer. See for yourself.

You want Nuln Oil and Drakenhof Nightshade for this little project. You try to "wash" with a primer, it'll all end in tears, trust me.

Example of a Shade pot

Automatically Appended Next Post:

the shrouded lord wrote:
Kind of.
how to paint silver

I'm not saying it didn't behave like a wash - I'm just saying that's pretty odd considering what they're marketing it as. However, we won't know if your experience is typical unless we get someone else's opinion in here, as I don't have the paint myself. Good luck anyway! Maybe take the pot in to the store you got it from when you go to some Drakenhof and ask about it?

I don't really like the new GW metallics, they have a strange consistency and don't have a smooth finish. I've recently been using the Army painter ones, they are much more like the old GW metallics, I'm really impressed with them.
