750 pt CSM list, friendly tournament

Helloes,

One of forum lurkers finally asking some advice.

We are playing friendly tournament with few friends and few familiar faces from local game store. So lists can be anything from quite beginner lists (aka: "I brought all what I own") to bit better(?) planned. ("I brought three big units of canoptek wraiths, you mad bro?")

Basically we have two scenarios: Crusade and The Emperor´s Will. Both are played with just one objective marker for each player to keep things simple. Biggest difference is that in Crusade you can put your objective quite freely, while in The Emperor´s Will your objective placement is bit more restricted. Tables are 4'x4' and terrain is anything from lava (lots of difficult/dangerous/mysterious terrain but quite open) to quite high city ruins (4 levels highest building and lots of line of sight blockers).

HQ
Chaos Lord, Mark of Nurgle, Burning Brand, Veterans of the Long War, power sword
Troops
5 Chaos space marines, bolt pistols, bolters, meltagun, champion with combi-melta (maybe few could replace bolter with ccw)
5 Chaos space marines, bolt pistols, bolters, plasma gun, champion with combi-plasma (maybe few could replace bolter with ccw)
Rhino, havoc launcher
Rhino, havoc launcher
10 chaos cultists, 8 autoguns, heavy stubber (in reserves)
Heavy
Obliterator, Mark of Nurgle
Obliterator, Mark of Nurgle
Predator, lascannon sponsons

Total 749 pt

As you can see, I´m quite worried about enemy armor. Normally there is more than few rhinos, razorbacks, devilfishes, dreadnoughts, etc. Plan is to open up those transports and then focus fire to their cargo with burning brand, havoc launchers and the rest. Cultists are there to grab home objective and I gave them some guns to shoot. (I really don´t see point fielding a unit who just sits on objective and not doing anything else. With autoguns+heavy stubber they have some chance to kill something from safe distance from enemy.)

Obliterators in own units to just give more targets to enemy and make them able to shoot two different targets. (In our meta, almost everyone tries to kill them first so predator probably can shoot few rounds without any enemy shooting.)

So what you think? What changes you would make and why? Thanks in advance.

-----
Sgraz =)

Hi,
How come you pick MoN instead of MoT on your Obliterators if you usually get them primaried? It all depends on play-style, would just like to hear your taught on it!

I think it would probably be best to pick one of the CSM squads and give them CCWs instead of a couple in each.
Giving CCWs to the melta squad would probably be the best plan, since they need to go up close anyway. Maybe even give them MoK if you remove something else to get the points for it, and stick the lord with them!

//Elaps

Helloes,

I pick MoN over MoT just because of amount of fire what they get and they dont get instant death from lascannons/meltas/powerfists. So T5 vs T4 when majority of small arms fire is S4, quite easy to pick. 50%(T4) chance to wound vs 33%(T5). Basic math imo. MoT mainly helps against lascannons, meltas, demolisher cannons, etc. I really dont think I would see much of those in 750 pt game (okay, meltas I will probably see...).

Been thinking to get one dedicated squad to close combat and melta squad kinda suits that role better. I agree there. Plasmas work better with bolters anyhow because of same range restrictions. I kinda hope they can just stay bit back with their rhino, keep shooting with plasma(s) and havoc launcher.

-----
Sgraz =)

True true, I haven't played so many games under 1000pts for a while so I keep thinking to big when it gets to lower point lists. I am however kind of keen on going for some lower point games again now that i have cultists to fill out my ranks!

Either that, or switch one out for spawns for some dedicated CC! Have never played them myself yet tho so I'm not sure..

Re:750 pt CSM list, friendly tournament

Helloes,

I really recommend testing those smaller games. In our local meta, we play mostly 750 or 1000 pts games. Some armies are stronger ofc and not so balanced in small games. But if you are playing with friends and main point is have fun, it works fine. Normally one 750 pt game takes about an hour, hour and a half nowdays. So you can squeeze quite many games in one evening.

Cultists are really great now. They are those cheap objective holders and their upgrades are so cheap that you can fit them to any role. They are not really good at anything but they try to do their best. Few memorable fights already with cultists involved in fighting. One where my cultist defend my objective and killed lonely Logan Grimnar with overwatch fire for example. We got so good laughs out of it.

Spawns are great but biggest problem is their lack of armor and you really need to buy more than just few to get most out of it. Two spawns just die in enemy fire before reaching their lines. Three makes quite small difference, four probably survive to crash into enemy lines. I would rather use bikes. Turboboost over the field, take cover and next turn go to shoot enemy flank with plasma guns. But I kinda want to keep three scoring units so I probably dont do that much changes.

-----
Sgraz =)

Yea smaller games don't necessarily means less fun, just that when you have alot of models, atleast i kind of tend to want to field them all at once!
Overwatch is just stupid at the moment with rapidfire...
I just got my cultists and I'm really keen on getting them into action! Will probably run them in two squads, one shooty ten man and one melee with twenty of them with flamers!

I usually go with meltas on my bikes but I'm really keen on getting a couple more and run them as a nurgle melee squad! Let the cultists eat the overwatch and then charge in with the bikes!
