1500 Points - Iyanden vs Chaos Daemons

Greetings Dakka!

Been a while since i've done a battle report (mine are usually in video form), so I thought i'd stick a quick one up from a game I played last night (no pics unfortunately).

1500 Points - Iyanden Wraithhost vs Slannesh Chaos Daemons (featuring fateweaver)

My List:

Spiritseer (Voice of Twilight/Embolden)
Spiritseer (Voice of Twilight/Enhance)
Spiritseer (Voice of Twilight/Destructor)
Spiritseer (Quicken/Destructor) + Wraithforge Stone

Wraithguard x 5
Wave Serpent w/Twinlinked Shuriken Catapults, T/L Scatter Laser, Holofields

Wraithguard x 5
Wave Serpent w/Twinlinked Shuriken Catapults, T/L Scatter Laser, Holofields

Wraithguard x 5
Wave Serpent w/Twinlinked Shuriken Catapults, T/L Scatter Laser, Holofields

Wraithknight w/Scatter Laser, Suncannon + Scattershield

1495

My Opponents List (from Memory):

Fateweaver
Keeper of Secrets (Level 1 Psyker)

10 Horrors w/ irridecent Horror
10 Horrors

Flying Slannesh Prince, Greater Gift, Exalted Gift
Flying Slannesh Prince, Greater Gift, Exalted Gift

Allies

Black Mace Flying Prince
10 Cultists

So 2 small armies clashing here, wraith units against Daemon Prince spam. I should point out I've been running an Iyanden army for years, so i'm not a bandwagoner for the new stuff! That being said, I picked up the Iyanden codex almost immediately upon it's release, suits my army amazingly!

Mission: Annihilation
Deployment: Vanguard Strike
First Turn: Eldar
Night Fighting: Turn 1

Eldar(Iyanden Table) Warlord Trait: Wraithknight(D3(2) Rerolls for warlord)
Chaos Daemon Warlord Trait: Fateweaver (Master of Unreality)

Table set up is mostly imperial ruins. I win the roll off for table side so I pick a corner which is tall enough to hide my serpents behind and also give my Wraithknight a cover save. For My opponent, he deploys Fateweaver, and his princes beind a building on the opposite side of the table, blocking LOS effectively. His Keeper of Secrets, Cultists, and Horrors Start the game in reserve.

My opponent rolls to seize.... and gets a 5.

Turn 1 Eldar
----------------------
With no targets to see (and my serpent shields useless due to night fighting and not being able to see anything), all I do this turn is move my skimmers an inch each to claim their jink saves for the following turn.

Turn 1 Daemons
----------------------
One of the Daemon princes has generated the Grimoire as it's Daemonic gift. This is used on Fateweaver to give him a 2++. All of the flying monstrous creatures fly high, and move towards my deployment zone, also moving flat out in the shooting phase. The Warp is calm this turn.

Turn 2 Eldar
----------------------
All three wave serpents move out from behind the LOS blocking terrain they were behind (though they do not move closer to the flying circus, just out enough to see them). Only 1 wave serpent has it's scatter laser in range of one of the princes, so that one fires first. No wounds are caused, but a grounding test is forced - it fails, but Fateweaver saves with his 1 re-roll per turn. The other wave serpents discharge their serpent shields at the same prince, but fail to score any hits. The wraithknight remains behing the building, sticking close to the save serpents.

Turn 2 Daemons
----------------------
Fateweaver is successful with the Grimoire again this turn. The Keeper of Secrets arrives via Deep Strike, and lands right next to the wraithknight and one of the wave serpents. One unit of horrors also arrives, but teleports deep in enemy territory, far away from the rest of the battle.

The Flying Circus moves up towards the Wave serpents in the movement phase, still flying high. Fateweaver opens up on the lead serpent with Bolt of Tzeentch, inflicting a hull point of damage on it. The beam fails to damage the next serpent. The next nearest prince is just in range with Lash, unloading a barrage of S6 shots onto it, taking one more hull point.

The Keeper of Secrets casts Psychic Shriek on the Wraithknight, deny the witch is failed. The wraithkight scores 11 from its leadership test, and fails its invulnerable save, losing a wound.

The warp storm generates a Slannesh effect this turn, inflicting a random number of S6 Rending hits on units, but no damage is dealt this turn.

Turn 3 Eldar
----------------------
The Spiritseer carrying the wraithforge stone uses it to put the Wraithknight back up to full wounds. The damaged Wave serpent moves up, and disembarks a unit of wraithguard with a spiritseer (one spiritseer remains inside the serpent), and spirit marks the Grimoire Prince. The next nearest wave serpent backs off, while the other moves around the other side of the keeper of Secrets, and disembarks the unit of Wraithguard inside (along with the spirit seer). The wraithknight jumps to the other side of the KOS to allow clear shooting from the unit of wraithguard.

The damaged serpent opens fire (including its serpent shield) on the prince carrying the Grimoire, no wounds are caused but a grounding test is taken - failed, and re-rolled thanks to fateweaver. The second wave serpent also opens up on the same prince - same result, no wounds grounding test passed. The third serpent also opens fire - and fails to score any hits. The unit of wraithguard near the prince has no choice but to snap fire - and they also fail to score any hits.

The unit of wraithguard near the Keeper of Secrets opens fire, inflicting 2 wounds on the greater Daemon. The wraithknight also opens fire with its scatter laser and sun-cannon, taking one more wound. The wraithknight then charges the Keeper of Secrets. The Keeper of Secrets opts to smash, and causes 3 wounds on the wraithknight - the scatter shield saves 2 of these, and both combatants pass their initiative test for blind. With Hatred for Slannesh Daemons, the wraithknight gets 5 re-rollable S10 attacks on the Daemon, and it crumbles under the onslaught (FIRST BLOOD, ELDAR 2 - 0 CHAOS DAEMONS).

Turn 3 Daemons
----------------------
Fateweaver is successful with the Grimoire again this turn, and flies over near where the furthest 2 wave serpents are parked. One Daemon Prince lands in front of the squad of Wraithguard which disembarked, while the other 2 (Grimoire and Black Mace) fly over behind the wall where the Wraithknight is, still keeping high.

The Warp Storm rolls an 11 this turn, which forces an enemy psyker to take a Ld test on 3D6 or be replaced with a Chaos Herald. My only disembarked Spiritseer has to take the hit, and fails his test on a 15 (ELDAR 2 - 1 CHAOS DAEMONS). My Opponent elects to create a Herald of Tzeentch. The Herald then subsequently moves behind the Damaged Wave serpent, and casts Flickering Fire to take its last hull Point (ELDAR 2 - 2 CHAOS DAEMONS). The spiritseer inside passes his pinning test and disembarks from the wreck.

A nearby Daemon prince opens up with his Lash Gift on the single spiritseer, inflicting 5 instant death wounds....which he saves! Fateweaver casts a molten beam on the 2 wave serpents, taking 1 hull point from each of them. Psychic Shriek is cast on the unit which shot the KOS the previous turn, and 4 wraithguard are killed.

The Prince which landed now charges the unit of Wraithguard. The wraithguard fire over watch, and score 2 hits and 2 wounds! The Prince fails one of it's invulnerable saves, and suffers instant death (ELDAR 3 - 2 CHAOS DAEMONS)

Turn 4 Eldar
----------------------
The nearest spiritseer casts renewer on the Wraithknight, bringing it back up to maximum wounds. The wraithknight moves in between Fateweaver and the Black Mace Prince. The unit of wraithguard with 1 survivor and a spiritseer get back into their Wave Serpent, which backs into the corner. The unit inside the other Wave Serpent disembarks near Fateweaver in the hope he will be grounded. The spiritseer on his own moves up to the Tzeentch Herald, and Spirit Marks the Grimoire Prince.

The unit which overwatched the last Prince moves up and opens fire on the Grimoire prince. The miss several shots, but spirit mark helps a hit be scored - this is enough to inflict instant death on the prince (ELDAR 4 - 2 CHAOS DAEMONS).The spiritseer shoots his shuriken pistol at the herald of Tzeentch and inflicts a wound. All other guns shoot at fateweaver, and inflict 2 wounds on him, but fail to ground him. The Wraithcannon salvo also misses.

The Spiritseer passes his fear test, and charges the Herald of Tzeentch, killing him in a challenge (ELDAR 5 - 2 CHAOS DAEMONS).

Turn 4 Daemons
----------------------
With no Grimoire, Fateweaver lands near a wave serpent, while the black mace Prince also moves up to the other wave serpent. Fateweaver Destroys the first wave serpent with Molten beam (ELDAR 5 - 3 CHAOS DAEMONS), exposing the spiritseer inside. The black Mace prince charges the other wave serpent, using smash to destroy it in assault (ELDAR 5 - 4 CHAOS DAEMONS). Fateweaver charges the spiritseer in the wreckage, but the spiritseer survives the round of combat.

Turn 5 Eldar
----------------------
The spiritseer who fought the Tzeentch herald casts voice of twilight, and moves into coherency with the nearby wraithguard unit which has now killed 2 Daemon princes. They move through cover and run, scoring a huge 6 for their run. The Wraithknight moves in between fateweaver and the Daemon prince. The large unit of wraithguard opens fire on the Daemon prince, and kills it (ELDAR 6 - 4 CHAOS DAEMONS).

This frees up the Wraithknight to charge Fateweaver. The Wraithknight burns both it's re-rolls to hit fateweaver with 5 instant death wounds, which is enough to bring him down. (WARLORD, ELDAR 8 - 4 CHAOS DAEMONS).

My opponent decides to call it a day after the death of Fateweaver.

My thoughts on the game:

1)I think that my opponents list is going to be pretty scary against most things. I think that on one of the princes he uses a portal glyph, which would have given him a significant advantage in terms of scoring units, and I think i'd have struggled to keep up had this been the case - especially with Fateweaver's re-roll.

2) I think that he's unlikey to come up against such a large volume of S10 shooting in the majority of his games, so I don't think that he will be instant deathed quite as much as it happened in this game.

3) As useful as the grimoire is, i'm not too sold on the idea that you need to babysit one MC with another. I know it's range 24", but I can see situations where you might get pulled out of range. I've heard of the grimoire being used with a unit of 4 tzeentch heralds and 9 screamers for a 2++ re-roll.

4) When the new codex dropped, I was concerned with the loss of fortune on wraithguard. I used to run 3 footslogging units of 10 with Eldrad and a Farseer. I have to say - the ability to run troops units in smaller sizes is amazing, especially now that you can mechanise them. When you combine all this with the ability to gain battle focus on your wraithguard, you can pretty much deploy S10 AP2 guns wherever you need them, and that is a powerful threat indeed.

5) Wraithknights are ok. Wraithknights with Iyanden wargear enhancing them are scary. For any other wraithguard players out there, I cannot recommend this supplement enough, it is such a boost to your army.

So I hope you enjoyed this random report! Please leave your thoughts, questions and comments!

Great battle report, I loved keeping track of the VPs throughout. But the one thing I didn't understand is why he charged with Fateweaver as he is only WS1 :/

1500 Points - Iyanden vs Chaos Daemons

Sounds like your opponent made some strange decisions with Daemons. I feel like a lot of people bring Fateweaver but don't really use him that well. As an MC, wouldn't he be able to fire off two shooting powers per turn? Unless you didn't mention it, he didn't buff any other units with divination or telepathy. With no grimoire you need to get him back and NEVER get fatey into CC.

Suggest that your friend try a 305pt Lord of Change. I prefer him to fatey, I also leave they grimoire at home.

Nice victory!
