Ultramarine Librarian

Last 40k event at my FLGS I won a raffle for a single blister pack. Selection sucked and there wasn't really anything I needed so I picked up the Chaplain with the jump pack with the intention to convert it for use as a Librarian and just to paint for fun. Spent the last few days working on it and I think it's my best single model so far.

Just a couple of simple changes, I dropped the jump pack obviously for the pack from the plastic Captain kit and then took the two handed power sword from a Grey Knight kit and swamped it in for the Crozius.

The sword is the weak point and I'm gonna play around with making a few changes to it.

It was a blast to paint!

(broken links removed)
I must say, nice work! But... it kinda looks too much like a blue Chaplain to me still. A head swap (perhaps with a Grey Knight, for the hood) would have done wonders.

Ultramarine Librarian

Yep. The images are still viewable if we copy the URL and visit directly, but the workaround is a bit of a pain, especially if there are a number of separate images. The Dakka Gallery really is the best option for posting images on the board.

As for the work, itself, I agree with Super Ready. The model looks pretty good (edgelining is too stark for my tastes, but it's not bad work, by any means), but isn't immediately identifiable as a Librarian. The skull mask screams "Chaplain," for one, and the rest of the sculpt is nondescript, in terms of role - except that those familiar with the SM range will recognize it as a Chaplain model. A few Librarian-appropriate details (censer, scroll tube, book, etc.) would help, but not as much as a hood (psychic or otherwise).

Ultramarine Librarian

Thanks guys, I fixed the images so they should be fine now. I'll explore replacing the head. I like the skull head but I do understand the confusion with it being a Chaplain.

Any tips on the sword? The goal is for it to be a molten hot sword fading from red to hot white on the edges.

Re:Ultramarine Librarian

What you've done is a nice start - I think just a more gradual build up to white would do it. You want a very stark but very thin end highlight on the very edge, the rest should be quite gradual, but be warned this WILL take time and patience to do it right.
Have a look for tutorials on here (or the web at large) for "blending" techniques.

Also, try to avoid being tempted to glob paint on to get the right colour... always go with multiple thin layers. It is unfortunately particularly noticeable with red, and I can see where you've put it on quite heavily in the middle of the blade. It's more obvious in pictures than it will be in real life, mind.

Ultramarine Librarian

Much better.

How are your sculpting skills? If you like the skull mask, you could always sculpt a cloth hood over it. A skeletal face peeking out from the depths of hood would look downright badass, I'd wager, while feeling a bit more Librarian-esque.

As for the sword, the main issue is that you're missing the white of your white-hot edge, almost entirely, on the front face and have it spread too widely and evenly on the back. You'll also want to reverse your warm colors - if the sword is getting hotter as you move out from the spine, it should be the darkest point (counter to usual highlighting practice).

It can be tricky to get an even gradient in so narrow a space, but even three somewhat distinct stripes (spine, blade faces, edges) would give a clearer sense of the effect you want to convey. Softening the transitions as best you can (using dilute layers, 2-brush blending, feathering, and/or applying a final glaze to help mask the steps and tie the colors together... whatever gives you the best results) while ensuring that each color is represented is what's really going to pull the effect off.
