IG Squad Markings

Hi guys,

So i've been struggling with what colors to paint my guard army. I finally came up with a simple combination which is appealing to my eyes... so am going with that.

Here is my first pass through. Ive been playing 40k for 5 years and this is sadly my first painted model hahah

I know there is a lot of sloppiness and a lot of room for improvement.. fortunately I have like 300 guardsmen to paint so... hoping to get better as I practice.

Anyways, point of the post.

I am going to be making my cadians all members of platoons, so broken up into different infantry squads. I wanted to somehow mark them to designate which squad they were in. i was thinking of marking their shoulders, but wondered if anybody had any other ideas. I also thought of painting the base of the rim a certain way depending on which squad it was. This is both for organization purposes and also just for fluff / fun. I have enough models theses days to dedicate men to squads and dont have to mix / match them etc.

Any thoughts are welcome.

You've noted the most common way of designating squads already

Either paint a distinguishing colour or number on the shoulder pad, or paint the base rim a particular colour. As the Guard has a fundamental squad numbering system in the fluff you can easily use that, or you can come up with your own numbering system.

You could use the tops of their helmets for squad markings, also. Makes it easy to glance down and see which guardsmen belongs to which platoon.

IG Squad Markings

It depends how detailed your willing to get. not sure about the current codex but the older one had the marking system in it. going off memory the squad marking is a number in a circle with the circle cut in 2 and with diffrent colours in each half.

so the number is the squad number (with a skull for comand squads)
the 2 coulours represent platoon and company

so a 1 in a half blue half red circle would be 1st squad blue platoon, red company.

now thats from momory and also from back when ypou got transfers in the guard boxes, it would probably be easier to enlarge the scheme slightly and cover the whole shoulder pad.

a simpler way would be to paint the imperial egals on the hlemts and armour diffrent colours by squad.

thats if you want a vissible way of identifying , if its just for set up, put a diffent couloured blob of paint under the base per squad
