I found a FLGS with a regular player group and really helpful staff, and got hooked when I played a demo game. My roommate has even started with me!

I don't own any models yet, but I'm going to play Eldar, because I find their look and background really cool. I might eventually branch out into Dark Eldar and Tau, my 2nd and 3rd favorites respectively, when I get the money.

Don't worry; getting the rulebook and Codex: Eldar were the first things I did. My friend bought Dark Vengeance for the Dark Angels (what he wants to play), so we plan on assembling and painting the Chaos troops as practice.
