White primer came out gritty as all hell...

So, I had a shift at work today, and since I'm just babysitting the computer system in an empty warehouse, I brought along my paints and 20 horrors of Tzeentch. First thing first, they needed priming, and I opted for white primer to really make them pop. So I went to a little used, well ventilated area (the whole building is climate controlled mind you), and sprayed em down on an old crate.

Walked away to let them dry and check on the system update, and when I returned, they were.....a bloody mess. The paint got that terrible popcorn effect, and was even powdery and flaking off (that's a first for me). Now I thought that the main causes of this was humidity and temperature, both of which were all well within normal parameters.

Now I'm wondering if its a bad paint can...can it go bad? Because when last I used the can in question, it worked fine (Krylon flat white spray primer). I had also primed a couple other models black (using the GW black primer), and they came out fine. I'd even say the came it better then normal.

Needless to say i am not pleased, and will be heading out to pick up a bottle of Simple Green when I get the chance.

White primer came out gritty as all hell...

White primers are notorious for coming out chalky. More than humidity, hot and/or dry air contributes to grainy spray applications, as the atomized particles start to cure and clump in the air. The result is a rough finish which, as you've seen, is unable to properly bond, both to itself and to the model. Spray closer (moving quickly, to avoid excessive buildup from the more concentrated spray), next time, and you should have better results. This lot, unfortunately, will need to be stripped and re-sprayed.

I'd think you need to spray closer to stop the primer drying in the air.
