2000 point game Vs Tyranids using Space Marines.

Hey guys this is my first post on here and was hoping for some general advice. Firstly i'll tell you what I'm likely to be fighting. I'm against a player I know to normally use limited numbers of gaunt squads, using 2 or 3 and usually full sized. He also tends to run heavy cost monsters, tyrannofex, carnefex and hive tyrants.

Normally I'd just run in guns blazing and see how I did but I figured I would throw my army on here and see what you guys think. I'm not the most tactical player in the world and use marines and necrons, so my armies normally run themselves. But I wanted some outside input to see if I can get better at the game.

My Army:

HQ:
-Captain = 175
Combi Melta, powerfist, artificer armour, digital weapons, hellfire shells.
-Command Squad = 155
4 Meltaguns
-Chaplain = 140
Terminator/Storm Bolter, Digital Weapons

Troops:
-Tac Marines = 190
Plasma Gun, Lascannon
-Tac Marines = 215
Plasma Gun, Lascannon, Power fist

Elites:
-Sternguard = 300
10 Combi Meltas
-5 TH/SS = 200
-Dedicated Redeemer = 250
Multi Melta

Heavy Support:
-Whirlwind = 85
-Vindicator = 125
Siege Shield
-Lascannon Predator = 165

Main Idea was for the whirlwind and vindicator to run crowd control, sternguard chip in with the infantry unless a monstrous creature is an issue. Then the Tactical Marines, lascannon predator, hq units take on the creatures more directly. Not looking for a downright competitive list, but one that will do well.

Any help is much appreciated.

Maybe drop the pred for a TFC- saves you 65 points that you can put elsewhere and gives you 4 small blasts each turn- chance to do a lot more damage.

Also against Nids, you're going to want to do some sort of crowd control. Sternguard are good for that, but I think 10 combi-meltas is slight overkill. Maybe switch a few of those out for combi-flamers instead. More bang for the buck.

Also, how are you planning to get those Sternguard onto the field? I know you've got the LR to bring your Termies in, but I didn't see anything for your Sterns. Maybe lop off a few of those combis and invest in a DP for the Sterns. I see a lot of footslogging troops that in theory could be good, but at the same time it's going to take time to get them across the board.

Re:2000 point game Vs Tyranids using Space Marines.

Do you know what his list will consist of? At least in general maybe not the exact list?

A Nid player in my local area plays Tervigon spam, Swarmlord, Flyrant, Doom, 1 unit of Raveners and as many Zoanathropes as he can field at 1850 - 2000.

If your playing something like that may I suggest that you consider Devastator squads and or as many heavy weapons as you can field. The amount of Iron Arm can be horrible to deal with. An Aegis Defence Line will also be helpful in protecting you against the Zoanathropes, and an Icarus can instant death a Doom if he fails his save. So many times I have seen him crush lists that are tank heavy and do not have enough high powered heavy weapons like ML, LC, and AC. I used to have trouble with my Guard untill I took 10 heavy weapon teams against him and stopped taking Russes and Cimeras.

Your first turn will be using bolter fire to deal with the Flyrant and Raveners, or whatever fast moving unit he chooses to be all up in your face. Second round of bolter fire will be at the Doom that came down in a Mycetic Spore.

Back to turn one shooting your heavy weapons, Do not be tempted to shot the Zoanathropes just yet the Tervigons are your priorty. Attempt to kill the Tervigons that can produce squads first, if they can't produce anymore ignore them for that turn unless they are almost dead. lastly the Swarmlord, don't be afraid to ignore it untill the last minute, if you have to feed it a TAC squad to slow him down a turn thats ok. Don't assault it, just surround it, better to and feed it a TAC squad than let him assault a Devastator squad or something more important.

Hope my experiences help I play him every other week at least. It took me awhile to learn these tactics to beat him. It works, if you don't believe me play a proxy game by yourself at home.

Here is a 1850- 2000 Marine list a friend has that did very well against him.
I dont have the codex or points values at the moment

HQ
Libarian not sure how he was equiped
Commander Had some neat gear for combating Tervigons only, Swarmlord is just too tough to crack in CC
not sure if there was a command squad.

Troops
4 10 man TAC squads plasma or melta and a missle launcher, 2 base Rhinos howevr squads did not get in untill time to grab objectives (maybe only 3)

Elite
2 10 Terminator squads one with 2 assault cannons the other 2 with Cyclone Missle launcher
starting on the battle field. He lost almost every first round of CC, do to challenge although, he did get lucky once in a while do to rerolls from squad support. Your better off losing the sargent, because after that the second round saw the squad slaughter a Tervigon.

Fast Attack
3 flyers the ones with twin assault cannons and sometype of missle launcher, sorry cant remember the name

Heavy Support
3 7-8 man devastator squads, one had 4 missle launchers, one had 4 lascannons, not sure for the other. The sargent and 2-3 extra marines were there to soak up Doom wounds.

Aegis Defence Line with Icarus

2000 point game Vs Tyranids using Space Marines.

Thanks for the help there Rune Stonegrinder.

His normal lists consist of a footslogging hive tyrant, one flying one. 2-3 Termagant/Hormagaunt squads. A squad of buffed Carnefex, Tyrannofex, maybe 2 Zoanthrope, Trygon Prime.

He doesn't own any Tervigons, but we've been asking him to proxy his tyrannofex for a while now. He also hasn't tried the biomancy powers which is another thing we've been asking him to use.

Hes very stuck in his ways of how he plays the game, so whilst I'm looking to make a list that will hold it own I don't exactly want to crush him if he takes new things in case he gets put off from trying them and we have to talk him into it all over again. He plays like the older editions of Tyranids allowed. He hasn't changed the way he plays to fit in with new editions.

He sounds more like he is waiting for the new Codex or he finds the Tervigon an ugly model. I don't blame him it is ugly. Our local Nid guy has been winning almost every tournment, which has prompted a huge surge in seriously competive lists. However, like your nid guy there are a few who refuse to change thier list and just complain that his list is cheese. Few others and I changed our list and tactics, while still having an all comers lists, to fight him.

This last tournment I would have won however I fought a Tau player in the 3rd game and he saved 30+ 5+ saves with 2 Riptides. On turn 3 one had 2 wounds left the other had 4, I looked at him and said will thats all I can do this game is yours. That was some amazing luck.

Man that sounds crazy. Very lucky for the other guy.

I hate the idea of running cheese. I play necrons in the aim for fun but I've accidentally a couple of times run something that's killed armies for fun. I often get complained at for using them at times but I used to get the same when I used Space Marines during 5th edition, when I could win most games just by showing up due to them being good all round.

My friend mostly just hasn't adapted to 6th edition, he needs to make some changes so that his lists do well, he hates new rules like overwatch and we keep trying to help him find ways to do better but its difficult to convince him.
