Pitted primer issues.

So I recently stripped 3 Space Marines and came out with them stripped of all the paint, but still with a heavy staining of primer. I then proceeded to re-spray said mini's using Halfords Grey Primer on a moderately warm day at a range of around 30cm from the model, in short sweeping passes. Now, from the method I've described, I can't see for the life of me how I've done it wrong - it's the method I always follow with good results. However, I've been left with 3 mini's with a very rough, pitted surface. I've put on a base coat and tested out a main coat on one of the Space Marines but I'm unsatisfied with the result as the pitting is very evident - is there any way I can rectify this situation, or am I best just binning the marines?

Did the partly not removed original primer seem smooth? You need to identify it is was a problem with the surface or the new layer of primer.

Re:Pitted primer issues.

From what I can tell, my method of spraying on the new primer wasn't at fault - I've always had good results with spraying primer in that way. The previous primer, GW's Chaos Black, was most probably the cause of the fault as it was removed in a patchy sort of way. Having removed it with brake fluid and, when that failed, Fairy Power Spray, the remaining residue was gooey in the recesses and heavily stained on the surfaces. I did proceed to lightly sand away the residue where I could, but even on the areas where I know I'd sanded it's pitted. Any help?

EDIT: Just found a piece from the same batch that i'd forgotten to spray - the residue is quite thick despite multiple attempts at stripping.

I would try five minutes in acetone based nail varnish remover. Longer than that and the plastic of the figures will start to be affected.

Will do. I may as well try it out on plastic figures as I doubt, if it doesn't work, i'll be able to recover them anyway.
