Shrine of Chaos. How would you run it?

A friend of mine recently bought some terrain from someone off a local web-sales site.

He ended up picking up some Marines, terrain pieces (foam rocks) and we got a nice "How to build your own terrain" book!

He also, picked up a Land Raider sized piece of terrain that has chaos symbols, a sacrificial altar and obelisks!

We both agreed it would make a fine Shrine of Chaos as depicted on page 105 BRB

But I'm curious as to how we should play it? =/

Now obviously It would be a total dick move on my part if we divided up terrain pieces and I took this thing and parked it next to my 2 Defilers...

Has anyone ever played with one? What is YOUR Shrine of Chaos size? How do you run them?

What I'm about to say is, of course, not part of the actual rules. But the fairest way to do this is to lay out the terrain with your opponent one piece at a time (objectives too) then either randomise which side is yours, or roll off to choose, the same way you would for first turn. This keeps either player from trying to place pieces to give themselves a distinct advantage, as that advantage has half a chance of going to the other person instead...!

Of course, if this Shrine is the only big piece of terrain you have you could simply agree to put it somewhere on the dividing middle line (doesn't have to be smack-bang on the centre point, mind). If that's the case it sounds like you need more terrain! On a typical 6'x4' board I would call "Land-Raider sized" a medium-sized bit of terrain, and would usually be using 3 or 4 of these, about half a dozen smaller bits (like low walls, rubble or tank tracks) and perhaps one or two larger pieces.

I'd probably call the shrine a large terrain SR, considering the size of the land raider.

It's *tall* for a single piece, no doubt, but its footprint isn't actually that big for a terrain piece. About the same as a large single ruin, I suppose. Arguably for most terrain the width is more important than height due to most models being normal-sized infantry.

So for large terrain, I would be talking about things like this:

I should point out, I'm not saying you *need* more terrain straight away or else all your games will be wrong. By all means, play with the terrain you have available and have fun with it.
