KNF is fairly good. Its anthology sequel Mark of Calth is fairly decent too.

Avoid Legion, it is silly.
Deliverance Lost is another you can easily skip as well.
Descent of Angels is mediocre and slow paced with no payoff.
Battle for the Abyss is absolutely awful and should be avoided at all costs. I would leave Primarchs for later though as those short stories build on the previous books.

Mechanicum, the outlaw dead and nemesis are none astartes books given a good glimpse at life in the Imperium. I like them for this while others hate them.

A Thousand Sons makes more sense to read first as it gives a clear picture as to *why* the Space Wolves invade Prospero and also better details the invasion. The invasion is only a small part of the Prospero Burns story, though, so can be a good follw-up read. So far the only book in the series I have not liked is Nemesis. I've tried to read it multiple times and keep putting it down because it just doesn't pull me in or make me care about the story at all. I'll give it one more try and if it doesn't work I'll dump it at the used book store.

Part of the problem with trying to read the series "in order" is that there is a lot of overlap in the books across the timeline of the original trilogy and later periods of the heresy in them. So some books go back to the time of the first book in the original trilogy, or before and there is no simple timeline. I've just gone with the concept of reading the books based on the time of their release as aside from the original trilogy the timing is just hard to settle for the rest.

Know No Fear is IMO the best book in the series, and one of the best books I've read in years. It almost made me a ultramarines fan, almost...

As previously stated, Battle for the Abyss was terribad. I felt it got almost tolerable towards the end but holy crap was the beginning awful. The authors depiction of the Space Wolf was just so corny and stupid... The Dark Angles books I thought were pretty good for what they are but don’t expect much on the heresy itself. The entire first book and 75% of the second predate the heresy itself and don’t give any insight to the wider galaxy or crusade. To contrast that, Legion is entirely pre Heresy but the events in the book tie into the big picture.

Descent of Angels is slow but it covers the whole origin of the dark angels but you want to read fallen angels right after.
