Tyres! Help please

I'm about to start painting a model kit but it's the tyres that have got me stumped. The tyres are not the hard plastic like the kit but are the same as you get on die cast cars; they are rigid but are a little bendable. The big problem is that they are very very shiny black. As this is a military vehicle they especially need to be dulled down, so does anyone have any solutions?

They are most likely a urethane plastic or rubber. They can be primered over and painted down. Or you can use a dulling matte varnish on them with some weathering powders.

You can also use a fine grit sand paper to take the shine off. I've used 800 and 1000 grit for it in the past.

If you try to paint over them be aware that if they are urethane, acrylic based paint and primers wont adhere to it very well. Meaning it will likely peel or rub off in hte future.
