What thickness of plastic styrene should I use?

I'm building some scenery for my new table. I want to put the ground floor on some ruins and use it to base some other terrain I'm making. Some of the terrain is some barrels and crates. Some other terrain is tank traps. I also want to cut up an old rhino and an old eldar tank and put a base on them.

What thickness of styrene should I use? I was thinking .080" or .093". I was gonna get some from here: http://www.iplasticsupply.com/materials/high-impact-styrene-his-sheet/

Anyone know of a cheaper place to get it?

The thickness depends specifically on what you are making....is it load bearing? Or is it just to cover a foam piece or something else?

If its for basing...woah, I would get 2mm or more - but even thats pretty subjective.

Most people who use sheet have a few different thicknesses for various uses and projects ....

I would say maybe pickup a few smaller sheets (at greater cost) at a local hobby store...then if you discover a specific size you like and need a lot of, then buy in bulk - i would go with usplastics they have much better prices than the place you listed.

best of luck!

To make a base you want 2mm for a small piece and 3mm for a big piece.

For other things 0.5mm and 1mm are good all round thicknesses that are not too hard to cut with craft knife and/or score and snap technique.

What thickness of plastic styrene should I use?

Cheaper? Check US Plastics...they are were I get my flat stock from and are about the cheapest I have found. I didnt check the prices to compare though, but take a look at them.

Thickness? Depends. Once you get over 1 mm thick or so, it becomes more work to score and snap...so if I need thicker than that, I wilk normally laminate up two or more layers. I have some really thick stuff as well (up to about 1/8 inch thick) but I cut that differently and it is mainly just used for squares and rectangles of one form or another. 0.5 mm sheet is probably what I use the most of though. Brain is probably off on this, but that should be something like 0.04 inches or so...give or take whatever it needs to be correct.

If I need thicker than that I will use a cellular core PVC panel or plexiglass as I can cut those more easily using my table saw and other wood working tools.
