Starting a group from scratch

Hey Dakka,

I'm really trying to get some advice on starting a group from scratch in my local area. To provide some context, Locally there is one 40k group but it is difficult to arrange anything with them for a variety of reasons and I would prefer something more regular and with a wider focus of games such as Warmachine or MTG. Another group is in the process of setting up but don't seem to be actively engaged or interested in doing so though this may be unfair to the parties involved and I apologise to any of them who may read this post!

Asides from that there is a wonderful group at Queen's University that I attend but living an hour and a half away makes it slightly impractical to attend on a Tuesday night with a full schedule of class and work the next day(their 24 hour events are perfect though). The same goes for a great cafe that specialises in MTG and a club in a neighbouring city. The best option in a local town not too far away has closed its doors as of May to the best of my knowledge.

So really what I'm hoping to achieve is a group locally in my small city to draw gamers out of the woodwork and meet regularly with a broad spectrum of games that will serve as a more practical outlet for local gamers than travelling at inconvenient times. Premises are not an issue nor is a selection of starter sets and board games. Does anyone have any advice on how to get this started?

Also for anyone in Northern Ireland, does anyone know what happened to the Creative Destruction guys?

Starting a group from scratch

Set up a Facebook page firstly.

A neighbouring county to mine had a guy that did that and now there is an actual Warhammer presence in the city of that county where once there was nothing.

Start with Facebook, post links to the facebook page on relevant forums (Go to "The" forum with regards to your country. The place where everyone from your country goes to. For Ireland, it's boards.ie). If the forum has a relevant section (boards.ie has a miniature wargaming section AND sections for every area in Ireland) then post there asking for anyone who plays Warhammer, MTG, etc.

That seemed to work really well for the guy who set up the 40k presence nearby in my country.

Good luck!
