500 point Tyranid Escalation League List

Hi guys, I'm about to take part in an escalation league and I was just wondering how viable this army list will be.

We've decided to use some very specific rules for list building which I will also add to this post that I've adhered to when coming up with my list.

- No single models over 150 points
- Only one model per army may be over 100 points
- No Flyers
- No Fortifications
- No Special Characters or Forge World
- 0-1 HQ
- 1+ Troops
- Your Warlord is the Character model in your army with the highest Ld.
- If you have any HQ choices, one must be the Warlord.

We also have a basic rule that during this phase of the league we will treat every dice roll for number of objectives as a roll of a 1.

Now I've never played a game(other than a small demo game in my local GW), I've basically just got an idea in my head for what I want to do after looking through the codex.

17 x Termigaunts (Sacs & Glands) = 119

17 x Termigaunts (Sacs & Glands) = 119

10 x Gargoyle (Sacs & Glands) = 80

3 x Zoanthrope = 180

The basic idea is to slowly move up the board with my Gargoyles and Gaunts, creating cover to allow my Zoanthropes to take out vehicles and other high priority targets with the warp lance and if any of my smaller units survive, kill whatever is left

I believe the only two armys that I will 100% be facing is an Eldar and another Nids player, with another person playing marines and possibly someone playing Nurgle CSM or Space Wolves.

Cheers guys!

500 point Tyranid Escalation League List

ZenDEE wrote:

Wow, those are some nasty restrictions... They hurt you more than other armies too, since at 500 pts, 2x Tervigons is almost unbeatable. Now then, my suggestion for your HQ slot. Take a Tyranid Prime as your Warlord. Giving him 2x Boneswords, TS, AG, and regen only costs like 120 pts, and he is a CC death machine. He is an IC, so can join your gants to give him some cover, and they can overwatch whenever someone is foolish enough to charge you. I really like using the Gargs, so maybe drop the glands on the gants to free up 24pts, and add more gargs with it? They are basically faster Termagants that get a HoW attack, and have auto wounds on 6 to hit.

They will also allow you to slow down the Eldar shooting, and stop any Rune Priest JotWW shenanigans.

I might do something very similar to you, but maybe go this way:

Spoiler:

HQ

Tryanid Prime w/ 2x BS, TS, AG, ST, Regen -120

ELITE

2x Zoanthrope -120

TROOPS

13x termagant w/ TS -78
13x termagant w/ TS -78

FAST

13x gargoyles w/ TS, AG -104

You will want to use the Gargs as harassment units to tie up shooters, then have the Zoans protect 1 unit of terms (your objective holders), the Prime the other (as an ranged escort for his swordiness).

Since you can roll for Psyker Powers individually in the Zoans, I might take 1x standard Zoan, then have the other roll once on Biomancy (hoping for Endurance or Warp Speed here) and once on Telepathy (the Primaris power is crazy good, but some of the other Tele powers are just as scary). Then your Zoans become a legitimate threat to anything with LD <10.

Also, when you say "troops", are you referring to to just the troop slot, or are you allowed to take Elites, Fast, Heavy as well, so long as you only have 1 HQ?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Alternately, if you drop each Termagant troop down to 10, you can get an extra 4 gargs, and having 17 HoW attacks come at I10 is nothing to scoff at, and very well might kill a couple things.

First of all thank you very much for such an in-depth reply! I really like your idea and it seems a lot stronger than what I had originally planned.

I believe everything on the altered FOC is legal, so I can have whatever the cap in the rule book is of Elite, Fast attack, Heavy etc. I actually don't need to have a HQ choice, so I instantly thought trying to beef up a swarm would go further than having a single model worth a fair few points. Clearly I was wrong

Does the warrior brood box come with the bone swords I will need to create the prime?

Unfortunately no. And warriors in general can take swords, but giving them to a prime is amazing. The swords themselves cost $20 for 6 swords (3 sets), but if you go to epoch studioz, he sells custom tyranid bits for infinitely cheaper. The prime itself generally just looks like a warrior that you somehow make unique (I use a unique paint scheme and the epoch prime head). The important thing is to make sure your opponent is clear what is what, and what they are geared with, whether the league is wysiwyg or "counts as". Just know the prime WILL be target #1 if they know what he is capable of, and is thus why he should join a squad. Good luck mate. I love escalation leagues. I'm currently doing a custom one called Planetary Empires. Tons of fun.

Aw that's painful. I do really like the look of the GW bone swords though, so I may invest just to get the look that I like.

I'll have to get some other bits to make him look more "primey". Something like a greenstuff'd shark fin on his carapace or something.

I think I'll be using 13 termigaunts as it will let me more easily transition to playing with tervigons by buying more gaunt boxes. I'm not sure how much more use I'll get out of the gargoyles but hopefully they'll find a place once I'm allowed to play around with monstrous creatures. I believe the limit for 750 will possibly be 1 model between 150-200 (so my tervigon) and the standard FOC. Could you advise anything for choices at that level too? You've been really helpful and I appreciate it!

With list 1, you are just going to spread yourself out and cover a ton of table. You won't have as many hard hitters, but again, running that many gargoyles is a bunch of I10 HoW attacks that can glance AV10 to death. Not many scoring units though, so you are banking on parking them on an objective, then using the gargs as a meat shield to keep them alive and uncontested.

List 2 is much stronger. Join the Prime with the devilgants, and let the other gants stick near the Terv. I wouldnt poop gribblies with him until you are parked on an objective, just in case you double out. Again, use gants as a meat shield for your big baddies, and laugh when the DoM spod hits the table and swallows many souls. Just pop him in the middle of as many units as you can, and watch him become a S10, 10W model with a large blast who shuts down their psykers. Don't be surprised if he becomes enemy #1 for your opponent, and he will probably be hit by everything on the table when he lands (should survive due to his 3++ unless they are packing a bunch of S8 weapons), but that just means everything else is able to move up the table unimpeded.

This list uses the Zoans as buff machines, again take 1x with codex powers, 1x with biomancy/telepathy (the telepathy primaris is the same as DoM aura, but targets a single unit and has double the range). I would probably keep the Tervigon with catalyst just so you can guarantee FNP. With only 2x powers, you risk not getting Endurance, which is a very useful buff to drop on vital units at this point value.
