Question About Model Assembly

When reading this please keep in mind that I've just got my hands on my first 40k models (Dark Vengeance) and am in the process of painting them.

My question is do you typically glue all model pieces together? For example, I notice a lot of vehicles (i don't have one yet, so no idea how they are assembled) can come with many different types of weapons and each game you may want to equip a different one. Are those weapons swappable? How about with regular troops (with their back packs and weapons/other bits)? Do you glue these items on and need a new one if you want a different look (upseting if this is true, GW already charges an arm and a leg to get started)?

Any clarification would help and thanks in advance for any tips!

Question About Model Assembly

It depends on what you are comfortable with. I personally asssemble completely then paint. But people will sometimes paint each piece individually and then glue it all together or even paint it all while it's still on the plastic sprue.

As for vehicles and swapping parts out it depends on how you put them together.

Some vehicles you can have the turret be removable and potentially get a second turret or make it so you can pull the turret apart and swap out a gun. Most regular troops, are glued together and you have to buy new ones if you want a new look. Some people will put pins in them and they can swap out arms or even magentize parts of their models if they know they will want a new look later, but it really comes down to how much time you're willing to invest in each model and how much money you are willing to invest in each model.

All in all, most people will just bite the bullet and buy new models for regular troops if they want a different look. When it comes to playing, as long as a model stands out and both sides agree you can have a guy with a meltagun on the model but agree that he actually has a plasmagun or something. When it comes to tournament play though, what's on the model is what it has.

When it comes to vehicles you really just see how it goes together in the manual, and glue it all together, you can leave turrets and stuff that will rotate, and I've had a couple that the pieces were a tight enough fit that I could swap out the pieces between games without having to pin or magnetize the model.

Question About Model Assembly

Personally I find it best to glue most of the model together, leaving off arms and other things that make it difficult to get a paintbrush into cracks and crevices. For most infantry its best just to glue on the standard squad weaponry. For special and heavy weapons, and leader models, there tends to be a wider choice of weapons so it can be a good idea to use pins or magnets to allow weapons to be swapped in between games, especially now that the model sprues come with a greatvrange of spare weapons and bits. There are lots of tutorials and examples on these boards of how to do that.
