Declaring Charges - Basic Confusion

I didn't see anything after searching for this, so apologies if I missed it.

Imgur album representing my question: http://imgur.com/a/ubPVJ

Photo 1 was the state of the table after my griffon prince charged my opponent's zombies. We're fairly new to WHFB, and as far as I understand the rules, Photo represents a legal charge move. The rulebook states that if you roll to successfully reach charge range, you are allowed 1 free 90* wheel, and another of any amount once in base contact. The distance between his leftmost skeleton was less than 4 inches, so he was definitely within range, as I understand it. Would he have been allowed to wheel 90*, then charge my prince, and reach combat successfully?

According to the rules, I believe he would, but it seems peculiar to me that his rightmost skeleton is moving much farther than 16" (the max distance if he rolled a 12 for charge movement). Is this a legal charge?

Declaring Charges - Basic Confusion

You count the base not any of the stuff sticking out. If that's what you're asking.

But p. 14 under Wheel gives you the answer. You don't count the wheel during charges.

So that seems about right. They would hit the rear and close the door and have probably 3 or 4 models in b2b.

That's my 1 cent.

Yeah, distance for the furthest charging model is irrelevant, but you need to be in front arc to declare a charge.

Declaring Charges - Basic Confusion

Just to add on and clarify.

To declare a charge the target unit must be in the front arc BEFORE declaring or rolling. Your second photo (post wheel maneuver) does grant a valid charge but the original does not as the griffon is not in the front arc.

Declaring Charges - Basic Confusion

As others have said.
The rotation of up to 90 degrees is only after declaring charges.
According to the picture the griffon is out of the charge arc of the skeletons.
If the left flank of the skeletons was the front rank, you would be able to make a flank charge on the griffon..assuming the edge of the unit did not clip the skeletons when wheeling.

Also remember the 90 degrees is a wheel, not a rotation.
This is a large difference as one corner must remain stationary and you cannot wheel backwards.

You would most likely have to reform to face the proper direction as the distance for your wheel would not be enough to get the griffon into the forward arc.

I would suggest getting a 45degree triangle or template to place on the edge of the movement trays to help with arcs..
