Battle report Necrons vs. Noise Marines

Battle report:

Caveat: First off I have to say I cheated. I accidentally had one more squad of troops than I could have feasibly fielded given the points afforded. I am not sure how I made that mistake, except I do suffer from dyscalcula so I should probably let my opponents see my army list before the game for a checksum.

Bluff: 6th edition is not “unreasonably shooty” or a “gunline game” despite what I was told.

My basic force org:
1 Necron Lord(phaeron) with warscythe, resurrect orb and mind shackle scarabs
1 squad 5 warriors
2 squads immortals (*10 ea)
1 squad wraths, whip coils, and one dimensional beamer (*6)
1 monolith
My opponent was Jeremiah with a very nicely painted Chaos Noise Marine army. He had no heavies, but did have a rather nasty terminator squad with his Chaos Lord.

The game was held at the GW store in Portland Oregon. Everybody was extremely friendly and professional. There is no restroom however so I recommend taking care of that before you arrive.
We rolled “Dawn of war” for the battle, with “objectives.” Jeremiah got initiative. He deployed with two troop selections on the board, his terminators were held in reserve. I deployed everything but my monolith.
Turn one was unremarkable, he moved forward and managed to zap one of my immortals with a plasma gun. He grabbed an objective and rolled a “1” which means it blows up. He lost one noise marine a turn from that objective. I moved forward and zapped a few noise marines with a tesla barrage.

Turn two got exciting. He deep striked a squad of terminators and a lord directly into my deployment zone and opened fire with combi bolters… which left quite a mess. Strangely he did not charge. I charged with my wraiths into combat with a large squad of noise marines, their overwatch fire took out three of my six wraiths. Since phaeron gives “relentless” to any squad he is attached to my warriors and Lord charged the termi squad. My monolith did not appear.

The general flow of the battle was that my Immortals exchanged fire with noise marines on one side of the board and it was about even, they got pretty much wiped out on the other side of the board. My wraiths and my Lord won combat each turn. Mind shackle scarabs are just sick.

On turn three my monolith deep strike in back of the noise marines who punished my immortals so badly. Since they had some weird rule called “feel no pain” they shrugged off my attacks. Also, my particle whip hit the monolith itself. The portal did vacuum up three marines however… which was useful.
On turn four I mopped up close combats and consolidated on my objectives. I used to monolith to grab the “exploding objective.” What is that anyway? Some sort of IED with secondaries?

Necron victory. Good game Jeremiah!

Lessons learned:
The battle was determined by close combat, against a fairly shooty army.
Warriors with “relentless” and a supporting Phaeron are formidable.
I have much to fear from noise marines
There is no good reason to ever equip a wraith with a trans-dimensional beamer, except it sounds cool. You can only snap fire it if you move and then you can’t assault. Why give up assault?
Whip coils are a must
MSS are sick (so sick I might not use them just for the sake of fairness, and I will not use them in a tournament).
Wraith squads should be maxed out, six wraiths can survive a overwatch blast from hell and still win a close combat.

My feelings on the rule system: So yes I broke down and bought the $75.00 6th ed rulebook about a month ago. Some of the rules didn’t make sense to me until I saw it in action. I have to say I really enjoyed the game and I think this is the best edition of WH40K since 2nd ed. WH40K 3rd edition was appropriately called “40K junior” by one of my former gaming buddies and he was right… so I do like the flow and mechanics of 6th ed. Simultaneous shooting would be a grand improvement. Since close combat is fought every player turn it would make sense that shooting could occur every player turn as well, I also miss the old “psyker phase” from 2nd ed. The changes I like the most are the cover saves granted by intervening units, “measure at any time” and the overwatch fire on chargers… except I don’t think you should get overwatch if you already fired during that turn (did I miss something here)?

That concludes my battle report and my personal baptism into sixth ed.

- J

Very concise report, which was nice, although I would've loved to have seen a few more pictures of the armies!

It's also excellent to hear about other players in Portland, I was wondering if there were any more of us down here, or if they had all fled to Seattle, haha

He didnt charge because you cant charge the turn you arrive from deepstrike
As for the mysterious objective . You first toss a d6 for what it is, if a 1 then toss in the end of every player turn. On a 1 it explodes.
It doesnt mean it explodes at once if you get a sabbptaged unless you toss that 1 anyways! Welcome to sixth eddition and you could save some bucks by buying the dark vengeance rulebook from ebay or a local player who got a extra.
