Colour For Stone Bases

Hi,
Does anyone know what Games Workshop paint matches a stone colour so that I can base my models? I don't want to use the Texture range and I was wondering what has worked best for you?

Colour For Stone Bases

"Stone" is a bit vague. There are tons of different types, most of which have internal color variation, beyond each having different dominant colors. Does your army have specific "home terrain" in their fluff? A strong color scheme you want to play off of?

If you just want "quick and dirty" generic stone, pick a grey, wash it black, then drybrush it twice - once with the original grey, once with the next lighter shade (i.e. Warpfiend and Slaanesh, Dawnstone and Administratum). Rarely looks particularly realistic, but it's always immediately identifiable as stone.

Re:Colour For Stone Bases

Thanks for the help.

I guess the main thing I was wondering is what is the base colour that makes up the Citadel Texture: Astrogranite paint. I quite like the colour but I prefer to work without the texture and I out can't quite see from the website what is the colour without the texture. The nearest I can narrow it down to without buying is Citadel Layer: Dawnstone or Citadel Base: Mechanicus Standard Grey. Are 1 of those 2 correct or is it a different colour?

Couldn't tell you, for sure - I don't have any of the new paints, let alone the texture range, for comparison. Best I could do is eyeball it from the website image, like you. Judging by the color swatches, it looks like the Mechanicus Base paint is quite a bit darker. Dawnstone is closest in terms of brightness, but is a somewhat warmer grey. Astrogranite doesn't fit perfectly into either of their grey spectrums, honestly - it's pretty neutral, whereas their Layer greys trend either warm or cool.

If you want one Citadel paint that will get you reasonably close, I'd either go with Dawnstone, for something slightly warmer, or Warpfiend Grey, for something slightly darker and cooler. There's no direct color match, sans texture, but those too aren't too far off.

The old 'codex grey' is a great concrete or stone colour. I sometimes use mechanicus then highlight it with codex grey for a nice, clean but oily boltgun.
