I made fins out of foamboard and used old CD's as bases for them. I used foamboard as the base for the rubble, and then used textured putty to build it up. I used Krylon's Ultra Flat Black as a base coat, and that's where I'm stuck.

I've got them primered, but when I try and paint any of the surfaces, it takes 6+ coats and it still isn't uniform--You can see the brush strokes in it. My Army's gonna be based black with red edging on the shoulderpads and red helmets. With that in mind, should I just leave'em black and try and weather them? Add the Chapter iconography to the fins or the hatches on the side? Try and paint'em like the article and then do the iconography?

Honestly just looking for some direction from here--I think they look decent, and 40 bucks for 8 (One had a bad experience with the base coat for some reason >< is a steal.

Here's a trick that will save you time. Use cans of spray paint and painter's tape. One  can of black and one red. Spray paint parts of it red then let it dry completely. Don't worry about the edges of the spray paint, just make sure the areas you want covered in red are solid. Then use the painter's tape to cover those areas up. This is the time when you should be thinking about looking up stencils and racing stripes. If you carefully place the tape and check its edges it will make clean up much easier. Now spray paint the entire model in black (not primer). Once this is completely dry you can remove the painter's tape and voila! red and black drop pod. 1) Buy a can of automotive grey primer. This stuff is TOXIC, so take it outside. Spray a very thick coat all over the pods. It will be kind of tacky and take a couple hours to dry completely.

2) When it's dry, spray the models GW black again.

3) Buy some el cheapo acrylic tubes from the craft section at walmart. To the tune of 79 cents each. Mix these heavily with water and then paint with a foam roller also from walmart.

I base coated the top shell of mine in dark angels green, and used a very large brush with boltgun to highlight the bottom part. Then some highlights o' mithril silver, and so on.

The roller made painting pretty easy. Two coats per pod. If so then what I suggest is to go to a fine art store and buy a bottle a high opacity red acrylic that is a shade or two darker then you intended red coat.  Some art store acrylics are much more opaque than GW paints.  Personally I use Golden brand Fluid Acrylics - Violet Oxide as a base coat for all of the dark red I use in my army.  I need at most two coats of this.

Painting large areas without it being streaky is difficult.  The suggestion to use painters tape and spray paint is reasonable.  Either way the follow-up coats need to be thinned down.  On large flat surfaces you get much less streaking by using a thinned paint in a bunch of layers.  Yes it is more time consuming but it is what works.  And since you have eight of them you can start with one and it'll be done drying by the time you do the other seven.

Ok, never mind doing anything special for right now--How do I get it to be that deep metallic blue that he talks about, and how do I weather it from there?



I'm not sure how he did it, but you have a few options.

1. I'm sure there is a nice (read: expensive) metalic blue spray paint that you can get.

2. Check out model car paint kits (Testors?). Many times these have techniques and materials to achieve varied metallic colors.

3. A blue ink wash over silver metallics, and then highlighted with a silver metallic, might be the look you are going for.
